Latest limited release from Wicklow Wolf, “Endangered species No. 16”, it’s a collab with Java Republic, Irish coffee roasters.
Ingredients (from the can): oats, Java Republic Costa Rican espresso, hops, yeast.
I’m looking forward to try this one, as most limited editions from WW were great so far, also, I love coffee, so here it goes.
Top: forms a 2” tan head, average retention.
Colour: cola-like while pouring, dark, murky brown in the glass, not jet black.
Smell: coffee, roasted and smoked malts. Not exactly a complex one.
Taste: coffee, lots of it. Unfortunately nothing espresso-like, it’s rather a 12 ounces long brewed coffee. Not as smooth and silky as expected, it lacks body too. Doesn’t feel like a 6.5% ABV stout with oats, at all. There’s some not hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste, with a dry-ish finish. Med- body and carbonation.
Summary: meh, it’s somewhat of a letdown. I had bigger expectations from WW, based on their previous beers. This is an average, quite light stout (for 6.5%), it lacks body and character too. Not bad per se, but nothing unique or exceptional about it. Stays in the crowd.
