500ml brown glass bottle with only a minimalist neck label and a branded pry-off cap acquired at a Lidl market in Sofia, Bulgaria, and served into a generic highball glass. Expectations are below average; I tried Argus Strong and it was far from good.
Served cold. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
Reviewed live. 5.7% ABV.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Half a finger. White in colour. Dissipates entirely within 10 seconds - leaving me no time to note any of its other characteristics. Leaves no lacing.
BODY: Hazy dull copper. Translucent, barely. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Definitely appears unfiltered.
Overall, it looks pretty average for an unfiltered brew. There's nothing unique or special here, nor are there any obvious flaws.
AROMA: Lemon/lime citrusy esters. Vitamin-y healthy yeast. Faint hints of clove.
A pleasant aroma of below average strength. No overt alcohol or other off-notes are detectable.
TASTE: Pretty well-balanced, actually. Helles malts, clean barley, healthy biscuity yeast character, faint clove, generic floral hop character, and a hint of lemon. It's very pleasant to drink, and boasts some surprising subtlety. I'm pleasantly surprised. Not as simple as anticipated.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. This has a natural taste and evokes a live beer. I'm fairly impressed - this was brewed exclusively for Lidl?
TEXTURE: Well-carbonated, if a bit overly so. Smooth, wet, crisp, medium-bodied, and of average hardness/softness. Refreshing, clean, and enjoyable.
This texture suits the taste well.
OVERALL: This is actually one hell of a beer for this price point. Sort of a zwickl-meets-pale lager, with a pleasant dose of yeasty character. It's very drinkable and I'd absolutely get it again at this price point, but it isn't world class or anything. Incredibly well executed for a beer this inexpensive. I expected cheap artificial garbage, having tried other Argus-branded beers, but was treated to a lovely little unfiltered lager. Definitely worth trying. Easily one of the best 3 beers I found on store shelves in Bulgaria. A hidden gem at Lidl. This is the kind of beer that makes surveying supermarket beers no one else pays any attention to worth it. Who knew a budget brew could be this tasty?
