Van Pur 12% Extra Strong Export Beer

Found in Kigali, Rwanda. Poured from the 500mL can into a mug. The beer is a pure orange color with a light tan foamy head with little retention. Smell is very malty, mostly bready with an undercurrent of sugar and toast. A surprisingly pleasant smell from this kind of beer. Taste is sweet and sticky, but not all that terrible actually. Bread, caramel and then just a hint of cough syrup. As the beer warms there is that astringent alcohol burn in the finish. Meant to be drunk quickly. For the style, I'd say it's above average. As an overall beer, this is of course on the lower end, but hey it's all about the context right?
