What a momentous occasion it was to meet Wolf Of The Willows co-founder Scott McKinnon while he was visiting Brisbane for a wedding. As you may well know I’m a big fan of their work, and in fact I was just remarking to someone a few weeks ago that WOTW ISA is IMO the progenitor of the Brut IPA style. Ironic that Scott has decided to dabble in the style he created and has not received credit for. So here we have: Wolf Of The Willows Southern Brut (kindly gifted to me by Scott). This Brut IPA is brewed with only the best ANZ hops: Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Galaxy. There’s no doubt this will be a nod to their ISA which I reviewed back in 2015… yeah, Brut IPAs have only been around since late 2017 according to BeerAdvocate, sure!

Poured from a 355ml can (good to see WOTW in cans now) into a Duvel tulip.

A: Clear golden body with a wispy white head that drops away quick leaving a nice thin-dense blanket on top, decent lashings of lace inside the glass too – this looks a real treat of a Brut. 8/10.

S: Nose is upfront with a the sort of dryness that Hawkeye would joke about constantly: Yes! We get it! Your gin is f%^king dry, get on with saving lives already! [jeez I’m showing my age now] Slight white wine vinous character, hints of lime, Sauvignon Blanc grape (there’s your Nelson Sauvin hops) and a wisp of piney/herbal hop notes. As (I’m guessing) a Brut IPA should be: hop-forward, dry, clean, with a white wine character. 8/10.

T: Wow! This is sensational. Much less punchy than the only other Brut IPA I’ve tried (Slipstream Brut Calypso IPA) but much more refined as well. Flavour profile is a bit of the above: Sauv Blanc grapes, touch of lime, piney/herbal dash, along with: dry cracker malt base, stone-fruit hop note as well (bit like how Galaxy comes out in Stone & Wood Pacific Ale). Finish is bone-dry with a slight green vinous note. The dryness really stands out and works well with how subtle this IPA is and very very exceedingly-without-question drinkable it is. I could drink 10 of these. Tonight. 9/10.

M: Good balance here too: almost-medium bodied with a tight dense carbonation, though maybe it could use a little bit more gas if I’m being honest. 7/10.

D: Would have loved to have tried this fresh (canned 12/07/18) however it’s still a testament to WOTW that the hops are still clanging around, and TBH even without a strong hop presence this is a quality beer, you can taste a complexity in the profile that WOTW bring to the table, excellent stuff! 8/10.

Food match: A nice hard sheep’s cheese for the wolf, like Manchego or Pecorino.
