On-draught @ Gammer in Ho Chi Minh city. 36000 VND per 0.3L pour.
Looks like a pils - clear filtered pale copper-gold body, off-white cap that sticks around for 5 minutes. Okay, it's darker than a proper pilsner, but they're Vietnamese.
Aroma is very appealing: floral hop character, pils malts, maybe sweeter Munich malts, flowers. No off-notes at all. Not the grassy Saaz character I expected, but pleasant.
Taste is of malts, generic floral hops, and sweet bread. Simple, shallow, generic, and anything but unique. No Czech Saaz here.
Texture is also hum-ho. Overcarbonated, smooth, wet, light to medium-bodied. Somewhat refreshing.
Overall, it's what you'd expect - a mediocre stab at a Czech pilsner that drinks easy enough to bring Vietnamese clientele into the establishment so they can look upscale to their equally oblivious friends and/or clients. Not the worst Czech style beer I've had from one of these soulless Czech beer houses in Vietnam, but also not the best (I guess that narrow distinction belongs to Hoa Vien?). At least it has more body and more flavourful malts than Bia Hoi.
