Color almost like a red ale, but obviously darker. Sweet start with a nice bitter end. On tap at Pies and Pints in Lexington, KY on our way home from visit with Russ and Sally.

Leaving their Belgian comfort zone and taking on an English dark ale, the Ethereal brewers invite the fall season with a softly textured but robust taste that's bigger than brown ale but more gentle than stout. Old Gregg is a hefty porter that fits the season like baby bear's soup.

Medium brown and shedding a dark haze over the appearance, the porter pours stately and somber. Its mild carbonation slowly releases a patient foamy blanket to skirt the surface like espresso creme. Its scent is nutty, coffee-like and chocolaty while its initial taste takes on the toffee, biscuit and caramel character to be expected from the English variety.

Its sweet center shows its bittersweet chocolate, columbian blend coffee, roasted pecan and slightly burnt toast flavors and are all tied together with the bold caramel and toffee that provides the underpinnings for taste throughout. Its balance is a broad and woodsy bitterness that's mossy and remiss of tree bark.

As the dark ale finishes, it does so with a tepid body that tries to lie softly on the tongue like classic cask ale. But slightly under-carbonated, the ale lays lumbered on the mouth with mild watery sweetness Its bitter-sweet finish is medium with a linger of coffee and cocoa.
