Just shy of imperial strength, the strong backbone of caramel malt and balancing spiced frame the groundwork for Ethereal's pumpkin spice ale. Oogie Boogie might be a monster of a beer, but its kind of a friendly one.
Pouring burnt orange with gullible pumpkin hues, its lightly bronzed color sheds a stark white, frothy and loosely knit head that collapses back into the elixir soon after the pour. Its bold fall fragrance captures the essence of grandma's pumpkin pie with those allspice medlies, graham cracker maltiness and seared-in sweeter tones. And its those tones that resonate on the early palate with toasted pecan, singed caramel, french toast and maple.
Supporting spices waft over the lingering sweetness with a culmination of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger to spice things up for the scary holiday. The malty/spicy tandem treads heavily on the middle and late palate with suggestions of pecan and sweet potato pie- equipped with praline and whipped cream.
Finishing with toasted grain, creaminess and a spicy linger, the sweetness begins to fade and dryness sets in. Ushered in with spicy rum-like alcohol, a linger of pumpkin pie outlasts the vegetative starchiness of yam and gourd an wins over the session with those buttery graham cracker echoes.
