Stepping outside of their Belgian-esque comfort zone, Ethereal takes a trip west and finds comfort with a brown ale. No, not English, but even further east- to America.
Medium brown and with a slight hoppy haze the beer is capped with a sturdy but short-headed froth. The nose is deep with caramel, toffee and a hint of butterscotch while a strong citrusy waft nearly overtakes the malt. Its taste is luscious, rich and sweet with all those toasted sweet flavors, chocolate, fresh coffee and vanilla.
As the ale encroaches on the middle palate, the sweetness begins to slowly relax and the beer's cocoa and coffee flavors become sharper, bitter and drier. Roasted macadamia, medium toast and over-cooked caramels gives a savory butter pecan finish with an assertive citrus bitterness that lingers like pine and grass.
Medium-full and simmering on the tongue with added weight, the lighter carbonation rate allows the beer's savory sweetness to resonate more soundly, but at the cost of crispness or refreshment. Slight oiliness and a vinous twang round out the session as roasted nuttiness and chocolate linger afterwards.
