not enough baltic porters out there these days, thats for sure. this is a solid one, great mouthfeel all silky smooth and quick finishing, with just a little alcohol peeking through, and a nice tickle of carbonation. it has a cool yeast profile too, almost tastes like an english ale yeast that might be used in something like a russian imperial stout, but it also has lager yeast flavors and properties. i wonder if there are multiple strains, a warm ferment on the lager, or a cold ferment on the ale strain. either way, whatever they have done is just right for this beer. notes of red apple come out of nowhere in here, with tobacco and licorice flavors as well, all coming from the malt, which is heavy dark, seemingly skipping the sweeter middle a lot of these have. it sits a little heavy in the belly, but i like that in this style, very wintery. overall my first beer from these guys is a good one, rather well executed and quite distinct, even as baltic porters go. a bit much to have several of, but slow sipping one was a real treat.

Reviewed from notes dated 1-16-15 from a visit to the brewery...
Black appearance; thick, dense, cream-colored head. Scents of vanilla, milk chocolate; faint mint quality. Ditto with the flavors. Medium body; smooth; semi-dry finish.
Good density (body) with nice, rich flavors. Notes of charred grain and semi-sweet chocolate pervade the flavor. Solid offering...
