About a year ago we spent a snowy afternoon brewing @guinnessbreweryus . A few of us had just returned from a short trip to Prague and settled on brewing an often overlooked Czech style —Tmavé Pivo (dark beer in Czech). The resultant beer resonated with both teams, and I knew it was a style I wanted to repeat on our home system.

For this iteration, we beefed up the ABV and malt profile as an homage to a now defunct Czech brewery that produced a legendary dark lager in the outskirts of the Bohemian Forest. This beer is the perfect fusion of creamy carbonation, slight roast, and a trace of classic noble hops. It takes me back to a cold afternoon drinking dark lagers in Letná Park while overlooking the city of Prague. Simple times drinking simple beer—in my opinion the epitome of lager beer culture. –Tom

Enjoying this one in the Timonium Tap room.
A dark Mahogany pour with a low retention head and moderate lacing.
The roasted caramel malt and bitterness are fairly well balanced up front. Subtle notes of cocoa nibs and mild coffee, vanilla, sassafras are enjoyable.
The mild bitterness fades on the finish and leaves you with a pleasant roasted semisweet aftertaste.

Clear, garnet tinted mahogany body with a large tan head and light lacing. Nutty, toasty, caramel malt aroma along with dark fruit in the background. Taste is malt focused, moderately sweet, with notes of dried fruit, bread crust and toffee. A modest touch of spicy hops in the aftertaste. Smooth, creamy, medium-to-full bodied mouthfeel.

12 ounce can poured into a dimpled mug.

Super dark brown but it blacks out the glass and has a two finger tan head. Foam is very persistent and rocky.

It gives off a cola-like caramel and light roast aromas, it also has a clean rainwater aroma. The flavor starts malty and lightly sweet, caramel and hints of dark chocolate, but quickly sharpens for a dry finish with moderate roasted bitterness. Mouthfeel is light-ish and mostly smooth, but not creamy, with a small rising crispness in the middle.

Really nice lager, a bit more malty and less sharp than a Schwarzbier, but still very easy drinking and left me wanting a second.

Look: It pours very dark brown with a tan head. It has excellent head retention.

Smell: It has some roast aromas with a bit of coffee. There are some very low dark fruits with very low spice.

Taste: It has roasted flavors with some coffee. The dark fruits and strong in the flavor than in the aroma. It has low spiciness.

Feel: It has a medium body that is quite creamy. It has a bittersweet finish.

Overall, it is quite favorable and the sweetness of the dark fruits works well with the malts.
