CO2 version. Appearance is black and opaque, with just a hint of amber color near the top when held up to light. Head is cream-colored and thin, leaving long-lingering lacing along the side of the glass. Aroma is heavy with malt backed by dark chocolate. On a taste, the roast comes through very strong, with the bitter dark chocolate supporting it at the end. Mouthful is heavy and not too fizzy from carbonation, making it delightfully drinkable. Finish is dry and leaves behind just a bit of chocolate taste. Not a dessert stout; don't go in expecting cake and chocolate milk, but definitely worthy of a taste if you're in Southern California and a fan of the darker side.

This was the nitro version of the brew.
Dark brown color. Light passes through the edge with a ruby hue. Requires a double pour to let the thick creamy head settle. Nice blanketing lace.
Dark malt smells predominately of black patent. Very dry.
Like a good Irish Stout, this beer is dry with burnt malt flavors resembling Baker's chocolate. The nitro makes the beer smooth even if the body is weak (also like the Irish version).

On nitro. Disapointing look with tiny head and no lacing to speak of. Very drinkable but to me needs more umph for a stout. Respectable color though. Feel is light for a stout.

On tap from Bolt Brewery in Little Italy San Diego.
