The Answer Brewpub "Barrel Aged King Kahuna The Great"
$4.50 / 5 oz. at the brewery on 17 June 2017
Note: 13% ABV; Bourbon barrel aged dark barleywine with Kona coffee beans, Hazelnut, Macadamia and Coconuts
Appearance: Black-brown body beneath a dark tan head that holds well and leaves some limited lacing behind.
Smell: Rich, fresh oily coffee beans and coconut. It's smells like a bin of coffee beans in a specialty shop. Nice!
Taste: Rich and full with coffee, dark chocolate, light chocolate, and coconut. I'm not getting the Macadamia or Hazelnuts but those are delicate flavors anyway, and getting through all of that dark malt would be tough. Median bitterness. Balanced with a roasty, dry finish.
Feel: Medium-full in body, and oily with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation.
Overall: An impressive strong ale that could also work as a dessert beer. I didn't find the Bourbon barrel however, but I'm not sure it would help. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's there and helping and I'm just not getting it. The "dark barleywine" thing is up for debate - I'll make no judgements regarding that at all.
