The Big Caboose Red Ale arrived into town November 2011 and has not stopped chugging. A popular and flavoursome Red Ale named after the train that rolls through Fernie sounding its horn as it goes, it's fast picked up steam and has a whole load of party goers jumping on board the Big Caboose. An easy drinking red ale, lightly hopped, slightly sweet with a roasted dryness in the finish, it makes a great new addition to FBC’s current year-round canned line up.

Part of a sampler 12-pack purchased in Fernie BC. Poured in to a pint glass.
Pours a garnet red color, clear with a creamy off-white head.
Smell is faint, a wet grain aroma, very little floral or fruit scent.
Tate is a smooth malt flavor, caramel and charcoal flavors.
Mouthfeel is medium, slightly cloying.
Overall a very good malty red ale.

12oz can served in pint glass. Beer pours blood red in color, and forms a substantial dirty, dark tan and reddish head. Excellent clarity in the beer, too. Aroma is malty and even a little roasty. Flavor is classic red ale: mostly malty, slightly crisp, biscuity, with secondary bitterness for balance. This is a solidly enjoyable red ale. Not only is it a better red ale than Fernie's brown ale is a brown ale, it's (appearance aside) a better brown ale than First Trax is!

This has everything I really enjoy in a Red. From a rich nose to slighted roasted caramel malt to an off-dry finish, Big Caboose nails the style in my books. As Freddie Mercury once observed, big caboosed girls, they make the rockin' world go round.

Can poured into a Red Racer pint glass. Clear bronze color with a finger or so of quick-breaking soapy beige head. Leaves a small spattering of lacing on the glass.
Aroma is sweet caramel malts with a hint of grassy hops ... Toffee, raisin, biscuit, chocolate, a whiff of orange perhaps.
Palate is similarly sweet, malt-forward with subtle hop notes. Vanilla toffee is the main element I can discern, along with biscuit, walnut or brazil nut, more low key orange, a pleasing absence of cardboard or other off-notes.
Sturdy medium body with low key English style carbonation. Finishes more dry than expected given the early sweetness, with some grassy hop notes apparent. Like many of Fernie's other offerings, workmanlike, solid, no clear flaws, little in the way of sexy factor but that's OK. This is how some of the low hop microbrewed red ales ought to taste.
