This one is to honor a beer near and dear to our brewer’s heart. This beer gives our mash tun a good workout: Black Malt, Roasted Barley and Chocolate Malt give a slight baker’s chocolate flavor and bitterness, while the Caramel 120 gives a subtle raisin/prune character. They make this beer sinfully dark. Oats give a nice mouth-feel and head retention. The hops are present but muted. Made in time for St. Pat’s, because drinking green-dyed American Light Lagers is stupid.

Pours black and clear, with very rich highlights of dark mahogany. 1.5 inches of fine chestnut head quickly settles to a thick blanket, leaving no lacing on a mug.
Roasted malt leads the aroma, followed by coffee ice cream and mild notes of burnt malt. Some molasses makes its way as it warms.
The flavor is sweet with light bitterness, while the roasted malt is faint. An odd fruitiness gives way to coffee and chocolate, which are both very faint, possibly only suggestions. The finish is long and slightly sour.
Light carbonation and alcohol are as expected in this silky-smooth, light-bodied beer.
This is a decent beer, however, nothing special. Scores aside, I did enjoy it out back on a cool and sunny, mid-summer afternoon.
