Our youngest LyonSmith child, Reid, is more mild than his sisters (which is about the only way a little boy is going to make it in this household). Like it’s namesake, Reid’s Mild is pretty easy to love - a lower ABV makes it sessionable, but the darker malts give it a complexity not found in light American beers. A minimal hop presence insures that this malt-forward beer doesn’t present as cloying.

Gem clear, bright copper, with no apparent carbonation after the one-half inch khaki foam is deposited. The head quickly settles to a thin blanket, leaving spotty lace on a Harp nonic. (SRM 13-15)
The aroma is filled with baked apple and lightly toasted malt.
The flavors are fairly eclectic, with baked apple being most prominent, followed by caramel. The middle adds nuts and raisins, bringing out very mild bitterness that comes and goes. Light tartness and sweetness become more consistent and slightly stronger than the bitterness as it warms. Bitterness returns in a long finish.
This beer has a light to medium body and a slick, watery texture. Alcohol seems to be entirely absent. The carbonation is very light, adding a texture similar to rough sand paper.
Turns out this in NOT my first rating of an English Dark Mild. It is the English PALE Mild that remains elusive. Still, I must say I very much enjoyed Reid's Mild Ale. So much so that it is shocking how rare this style has been. Being tasty and low alcohol makes it a stellar session beer for any season. I definitely have plans to stock up next time I am in Keuka Park, NY.
