i had this alongside the vanilla one, and i appreciate that this one is so much less sweet, the acidity, roast, and bitterness from the coffee all cut some of the obvious sweetness that was happening in the vanilla one, and i think it calls up the dark grain a little more, not so easily swallowed by the vanilla and sugar, i think this is a much more balanced beer and i appreciate some of the bitterness coming though. i also think the beer is a little odd, like the barrel takes over a little bit, and although there is a cool chocolate thing going on, its not quite as cohesive and decadent as the vanilla edition. the char of the barrel is there, there is a thinness too, and the alcohol is a little more exposed, i suppose it has to one or the other at this strength, boozy or sweet, at least its not both! i taste this forever, but i want more coffee in it, i think such a huge base stout covers it up some, and so does the barrel, this could totally handle about double the coffee i reckon. a cool series of beers though, certainly some of the more robust and process intensive offerings i have seen in here...
