Lemon Meringue IPieA. Imperial IPA w/ Lactose and Lemon Juice

As the warm weather comes to an end, theoretically at least, we decided to make a nice bright but kinda different IPA. We took a ton of citrusy hops, added lactose to give a nice full body and lemon juice to give a nice citrus finish. The results were fucking awesome. Drinkable with a nice round body, and nice bright citrus flavors blend nicely with a slight bitterness.

Malts: 2 Row, Flaked Oats

12 oz can poured into speigelau ipa glass no discernible canned on date.

A: Nice amber orange body fairly good clarity. Head is medium about an inch small Soapy white in color settles to a film.

S: some grapefruit, a little lemon, and some cantaloupe and pineapple. Maybe a little bit of a resin smell and some sweetness.

T: the lemon comes out immediately then you get a light bit of grapefruit some of that sweetness and a little bit of malty resin quality.

M: medium bodied but leaning toward fuller body. Has a nice light creaminess to it. Mild bitterness on the finish.

O: quite a solid beer nice balanced flavor the lemon isn’t overwhelming and the body has such a nice texture drinks quite smoothly. Well balanced with the sweetness and bitterness.

From a dateless 12oz can.

It is a mostly clear gold with a cream colored head. Decent retention with a film that remains the entire time.

It smells like lemon drop candy, grapefruit, and grains.

The candy like sweetness is still in the flavor, but much more surpressed/balanced by some pithy grapefuit and a solid bitterness on the back end. Definitely a noticeable lemon flavor and some sugars, but just enough to give it some character.

Pretty well carbonated. A nice crisp body and easy drinking for the surprising 9% ABV.

A solid beer that I would gladly drink again, but they say I can’t.

A twelve ounce can with no visible date poured in a snifter glass.

Look- Pours a dark murky gold producing a few centimeters of soapy white foam that quickly settles leaving a trace of lacing behind.

Smell- Lemon peel, grapefruit and sweet malt.

Taste- Lemon zest, grapefruit, white grapes, malt and fusel alcohol.

Feel- Syrupy thick with a prominent alcohol bite in the finish.

Overall- It's a big boy IPA with a balance of citrus and malt that reminds me of Founders Devil Dancer with a lesser alcohol bite. A nice change of pace from the juice scene.

Can:
Pours a light amber and halfway clear body. Head is long lasting, but without a ton of lacing.

Nose has a lemon-tinged tea, like a lemongrass tea. There’s even a little sugar sweetness to the nose and an indication that there’s some bitterness to counter.

Like the nose, the taste is a little different. The taste doesn’t stray too far though, and there's a nice malt-backboned bitter IPA at its base, it seems. The lactose may aid the malty balance to the pine bitterness. The lemon comes out and acts to bring a non-sour and actually more classic citrus bitterness. The lactose gets a little sweeter with warmth, but stays an interesting aspect more than disrupting the beer.

Nice medium feel to a very drinkable beverage. This beer is enjoyed by me because the “oddities” are noticeable without overtaking the beer, which seems like it could be a solid IPA without the additions.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy medium golden/yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing cling on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon juice, tangerine, red grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon/orange peel, light pepper/pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, lemon juice, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon juice, tangerine, red grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon/orange peel, light pepper/pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon juice, tangerine, red grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon/orange peel, light pepper/pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, lemon juice, and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is an outstanding DIPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, lemon juice, and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Wonderful vibrant, juicy, and lightly dank hop profile that works perfectly with the lemon juice; balanced bready malt/lactose backing, with no residual sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering.
