Kiwi Double IPA

Kia ora, kiwi hops and kiwi fruit assssemmmbllleee! And before you think it, yeah yeah its a fruited IPA, but this guy has some fun tricks up its sleeve. The unique tropical flavors of that little brown and green fruit combine lovingly with the equally tropical flavors of exotic and aromatic hops. Orange, mango, kiwi (duh) all harmonize on top of medium bodied and dangerously high alcohol backbone. So give your mouth a vacation to the land of the long white cloud, middle earth, or whatever you want to call that delicious southern hemisphere island. Drink promiscuously friends, cheers mate!

12oz can from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 3.79. No canning date but this is the most recent batch listed on their website. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku. Enjoyed 7/9/18.

Pours a bright but moderately hazy gold with two and a quarter fingers of near-white head. The froth fades to some patchy surface haze and bubbly band, imparting some rather sizeable swaths of lace.

Smells of vague tropical fruit, hop bread, citrus and some faint berries. Kiwi starts to shine through as the chill wears off.

Any lack of kiwi in the nose is soon made up in the flavor. A nice kiwi note is augmented by hints of orange, honeydew, blueberry, hop bread and a little bit of caramel. The alcohol presence is deceptively light, making this an easy drinker that can quickly catch up to you.

Medium body with ample but not overpowering carbonation. Just a hint of bitterness in the tropical, bready finish.

This was my first brew from Nowhere In Particular. A quite tasty, not overly bitter IPA that stops short of becoming the hazy juice bomb that is so ubiquitous these days. A pleasant departure from the norm. I’ll certainly be trying more from this nomadic brewer in the future.

Pours lie all other IPAs, golden in color. Little to no head in this one. Nose is just beer. Taste is typical of you guessed it, beer...but then the fruity flavor hits. Not a bunch of adjectives I can use, decent beer without much fanfare.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but was just released. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big juicy/light tart/tangy kiwis, strawberry, orange, lemon, grapefruit, peach, pear, red apple, apricot, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, kiwis, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy/light tart/tangy kiwis, strawberry, orange, lemon, grapefruit, peach, pear, red apple, apricot, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness; and slight fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of juicy kiwis, strawberry, orange, lemon, grapefruit, peach, pear, red apple, apricot, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, white bread dough, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, kiwis, and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, fairly sticky, and slightly acidic/tangy mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an excellent fruited DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, kiwis, and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV, with the mellowly bitter/drying finish, not aggressive. Really great balance of juicy/light dank NZ hops, kiwis, and bready malts. Not overly sweet/heavy, and not over done on fruit as I hoped. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected.

12 fl. oz. can
Served in a stemless, wine glass

This beer pours a slightly hazy, amber color with burnt orange and golden highlights. It is topped with an inch of beige head that leaves a few spots of lacing.

The smell is kiwi and tropical fruit.

The kiwi is there in the taste up front. I get citrus through the middle that carries into the finish with a mildly bitter aftertaste.

Medium mouthfeel with plenty of carbonation

I am unsure of how I feel about this beer. One sip is good. The next sip has a butterscotch taste. I have to err to the negative as I do in all parts of my life. I hope the next can is better.
