Batch 027: Old School/New School IPA
Fun IPA with progressive brewing techniques

Juxtaposition can be a fun little thing when it comes to beer. This is a prefect example of that, with more traditional C hops being used in conjecture with some fun new techniques we have picked up along the way. Combine that with Hornindal Kveik yeast, a fun little Norwegian yeast strain thats just a couple centuries old, almost went extinct, and has seen a recent rise in popularity. It's easy to see why all these ingredients have been popular at one time or another, this guy is flavorful and juicy, has almost no bitterness, and my personal favorite, has plenty of well disguised alcohol! You'll be drunk before you know it, seeing ghosts of your Norwegian ancestors looking on with pride. Maybe our parents weren't wrong when they said they don't make em like they used to, so cry out jubel and drink promiscuously friends!

Pours an opaque orange with two fingers of white foam. Head retention is good. Aroma is mango, melon, nectarine, tangerine, and papaya in a dense tropical fruit blast. It smells a touch overripe, but is otherwise well received. A little lemon lime cleaner in the background. Flavor profile is nectarine, mandarin orange, tangerine, papaya and lemon zest. Flavor profile is much more concise and well-rounded than the aroma delivering a fluid foray of tropical fruits. Lovely. Mouth feel is medium in thickness with a moderate fuzzy, pillowy texture (although it refrains from ever feeling 'soft'). Overall, interesting mash up of tropical fruits, and while the aroma may be a little overripe, the flavor profile and feel both deliver a wondrous experience.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 12oz can.

Dragging to IPA into the 21st Century, the brewers at Nowhere in Particular look to the past in making a beer that represents the future of hoppy beer. The choicest "C" hops with a unique Norwegian strain of yeast piled high on a hazy IPA makes this beer the best of both worlds.

Pale gold and reasonably hazy, their Batch #027 releases an arid frothy head and a fragrant array of citrus, herb and a hint of tropical fruit. Sweet with nectar on the tongue a hint of graham cracker comes with notions of honeysuckle and very light caramel.

As the flavors unfold on the middle palate, the hops reveal a plethora of fruit impressions that span pink grapefruit, valencia orange and a kiss of lemon to papaya, mango and pineapple and then to light peach and cantaloup especially after the malt sweetness begins to recede. Trending softly bitter and with a hint of herbal spiciness, the late palate takes on the taste of green tea, a fresh grassiness and a moderate sprucy bite.

Medium bodied and developing a semi-dry finish, the beer is light for hazy IPA and favors a highly drinkable, fresh and crisp mouthfeel. Its a delightful and pleasant beer that trails with a medium length bitterness of tea, citrus peel and a gin-like spice. Its not as flavorful as the trendy hazy IPA but not as bitter or dry as west coast varieties but its does borrow subtle attributes from both for a very sessionable taste and texture.

An absolutely delicious New England IPA. It’s refreshing and I thouroghly enjoyed this beer. From a can, it poured a light amber color, hazy and opaque with a healthy head and lacing. Had a fresh citrusy aroma and an outstanding mouth feel and taste. The alcohol content is very well concealed. As you said Nowhere In Particular Brewing, “ no two batches will be alike,” so I’m glad I had the opportunity to taste this batch and I look forward to many other batches and styles that you brew!

12 fl oz can
Served in an IPA glass

This beer pours yellow to amber in color and is hazy. It is topped with an inch of off white head that leaves spotty lacing.

I get a tropical scent along with some melon and pear.

The taste is pretty much the same although the melon and pear seem more pronounced in the taste.

Medium to lighter mouthfeel

It is really easy to drink. It has decent flavor and smell. I think the one four pack was enough though.

12oz can from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 3.79. No canning date. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku. Enjoyed 8/16/18.

Pours a dull, hazy amber with just under two fingers of white head. The bubbles leave a few trails of lacing where the initial head rested but otherwise once the head fades it’s gone.

Smells of pine, grapefruit zest, lemon and an almost pilsner malt note.

The flavors remind me of what I consider a “classic IPA” but significantly less bitter. Pine, passion fruit, lemon, mildly floral and just a hint of a bready, crackery base malt.

Medium body, a little slick, with moderate carbonation. The aftertaste is mildly bitter and a bit dry with passion fruit and some citrus peel.

A pretty straightforward IPA from Nowhere In Particular. I’m assuming the new school method referred to on the label is dry hopping instead of boiling because there are many familiar IPA flavors but a restrained bitterness. Not a bad brew at all but when reaching for an 8.0% IPA there are innumerable other options I’d reach for.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but was just released. Pours moderately hazy golden orange/amber color with small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very mild pine, zesty, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, white grape, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is a very nice NEIPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the minimally bitter/drying finish. Great soft feel. Balanced juicy C hops and fruity yeast; great wheat/oat/malt balance, with mild residual sweetness. A very enjoyable, unique, and well made experimental style example. Nice blend of both coasts of IPA styles.
