Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Very dark brown with a thin short lasting head and good lacing.
Pumpernickel toast smell and taste. Nice richness to the feel and taste. I enjoy a good Schwartzbier and I enjoyed this one.

12 ounce can into lager glass; no can dating, but was just released. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, and toasted dark bread/crusts; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and pine. A bit fruity aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of black/roasty/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, and toasted dark bread/crusts; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and pine. Light-moderate pine, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery, roast, charcoal bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, toasted dark bread/crusts, smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and pine on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of black/roasty/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice hop/char bitter/sweet balance, and minimal acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal fruity/yeasty notes present. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly crisp/sticky/chalky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is a very nice imperial schwarzbier. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of black/roasty/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, even with the moderately bitter/resinous/drying finish. A bit more hoppy, bitter, charred, and drying than expected; but well made style example. Great balance of clean/rich black/roast/Munich malts and earthy/spicy noble hops. A very enjoyable offering otherwise.
