16 ounce can, date is smudged but it looks like it was canned on 03/02/21. Purchased at Heart State Brewing about a week or so ago. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half frothy tan head that stuck around a while. Aroma is nice but light, the brew smells like maple, cinnamon, roasted malt, coffee and some licorice. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some dark bread, dark fruit and a weird herbal/earthy flavor noticeable too. The herbal bitterness stands out in the finish, and unfortunately it gets worse tasting the longer I drink it. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy with a very high amount of soft carbonation. Pretty sure there's some kind of infection, just seems off to me. It wasn't awful, but I don't believe this was what the brewers intended with this. I'll have to try a future batch if possible.

May 18, 2021:

Wow. This was a pleasant surprise. Somebody elses cool interpretation of the style.

It is black with excellent head. The aroma is pleasant and strong roasty malts. The taste is full bodied not too sweet stout, with more than enough hops to bitter things up the way it should be.

Highly recommended. A great effort.

Tried one just a few minutes before noon. Perfect time. A great late-morning treat!

Canned on 3/2/21. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a very dark brown; khaki head that fades leaving nice retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward. Hints of cocoa. Faint spices like cinnamon and anise come through as it warms. The flavors are bittersweet, but definitely more on the sweeter side. The maple really comes through. Some coffee and chocolate coming through. Subtle hints of cinnamon coming through in the finish. Strong malt backbone. Mild warmth in the finish, but it's not hot or boozy at all. Mouthfeel is nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy, velvety, sticky and smooth.

This is a solid Imperial Stout. The maple really shines and is clearly the star. It has a nice breakfast vibe going on. Not bad at all. It's enjoyable and fun to drink.
