Label Information: Strange Land Brewery Grand Cru MMXVI Bourbon Barleywine Brewed with Cacao Nibs, ABV: 10.9%, IBUs: 53. Bottle conditioned.
Appearance: Hazy caramel with a prominent, dense, and persistent tan head of about two inches. Ragged, but unbroken tidemarks adorn the glass wall.
Aroma: Massive aroma of wood and alcohol. The alcohol offers a spicy and unmistakable bourbon note. Burnt caramel and herbal hosp are present, as well.
Taste: Bourbon, wood, and vanilla open the taste, with the wood, perhaps oak, being especially prominent. Soon after, a wave of strong, spicy alcohol ascends, with a late, pleasant warming. Later in the taste, spicy notes, vanilla and cinnamon, especially, ebb and flow with with wood and alcohol notes. The finish is wood and alcohol, with the hops offering a late counter.
Mouth feel: Soft and full, very pleasant, with only a hint of carbonation.
Drinkability/notes: An excellent celebratory ale, would serve well at a holiday dinner or as an Apéritif. Do not pass by this rare example, should it come your way. Congratulations to Strange Land for a wonderful example.
Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber, with a pry-off crown, served in a Pilsener glass.
