12.7 fl oz. bottle, 2014 vintage, bottled Feb 19, 2015 according to the label. The final bottle of this stuff on the shelf at the local beer spot, just a shy over 8 years in the bottle. Expectations are not terribly great considering this beer is only 10.00% abv. Per the label; Product of Belgium; "Ale brewed with spices and natural flavors and aged in Islay Whiskey Barrels". Says Grand Cru 'Peated' above. Bottle also lists 10.00% abv as I've said, instead of the 9.00% listed here on BeerAdvocate.
Poured to clear stemless wine snifter.
A: Murky caramel color, watery, slightly translucent. It does conjure some small khaki bubbles.
S: Cold leather, vanilla.
T: The remaining peat / smoke flavor is about all that makes this one still memorable or remarkable at all.
M: Carbonation is nil, but what can you expect after 8 years in the bottle. Flavors & feel of silky caramel / vanilla. It's not undrinkable, given it's age, finish is dry, and slightly port-y, with flavors of dark fruits: raisin, fig, dates, super jammy, with a touch of smoke on the end.
If I had caught this one maybe just a few years sooner, I think we might have had a winner on our hands here.... would certainly try others in this series / brewery / repertoire .....

I just had their cognac version of the same year and where that one was so balanced, this one is much more dominated by the peat. The aroma slams me at first and made me skeptical. But then the flavor was better; more muted and easier drinking. The quad style actually works well with a modest amount of smoke. This is a good brew, not a great one. I am glad they kept the alcohol down a tad as I think even a percent more would make some of the more coarse qualities stand out more.

A: Dark brown with an amber tinge. Its got a light haze visible when held to the light, and little visible carbonation. Topped with a half finger of beige head.
S: The smell of smoke on opening the bottle surprised me. It was only then I read the fine print and sorted out which beer I actually was drinking! Pleasant surprise for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Smells like a dark BBQ sauce. Black licorice. Tequila, a hint of burnt rubber. There is a light sweetness and fruitiness to it, but its so in the background.
T: A huge hit of bunt ash, followed by BBQ sauce, more ash. In between, there’s a light sweetness, a hint of dark chocolate. The more you sip, the ash becomes subdued, and brown sugar and a little tequila comes through. Didn’t getting any strong barrel qualities aside from what I describe as tequila, until it warmed up and the carbonation flattened out. Then, a whiskey and slightly oak quality came forward.
M: Medium thick body, little carbonation. Relatively smooth finish.
O: Pleasantly surprised. Never had a beer like this before. Some Rauchbier-like qualities with the ash, but so different from that style. Tastes like eating cigarette butts, or the remains of last nights camp fire soaked in water. Feeling privileged as I appear to be one of the few who actually got their hands on this brew and reviewed it. I got it on Wishbeer in Bangkok, drank in Kunming, China March 17, 2015.

Brewer site says 6 months in Ardbeg barrels. Available from April 2014 while stocks last. 2014 edition available from March 2015.
The plastic Champagne-shaped corked eased out with a light pop and a puff of vapor. Poured a light mahogany, leggy-looking liquid under a heavy-cream head, quite attractive. In a tulip glass, the nose is powerfully smokey — good thing I noticed it said "peated whiskey" barrel-aged. Some toast and fruity esters under that, but they took some work to sniff out under the wee turf fire in the glass. Again, very peaty flavor, more so a middle-of-the-road Islay Scotch (I'm not familiar with Ardbeg), and not just in the smoke but also in earthy chocolate and licorice, a bit of grass, and lemon zest. Oily and coating feel, substantial, with a tingle of alcohol and perhaps wood tannins.
