Poured from a 2014 dated bottle into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a very hazy, dark ruddy brown with a thin khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, bourbon whiskey, dark dried fruit, a hint of oak. Flavor is lightly caramel malt, dates, dried plums, oaky vanilla, whiskey; finishes with dry malt, whiskey, dried fruit and an odd musty cellar note, which was more interesting than off-putting. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. An interesting barrel aged ale. I'm not sure I can detect what the original base ale was and there is little lingering Belgian yeast character. Flavors are somewhat subdued, but interesting with plenty of the dark fruit and oaky elements expected in an aged dark ale. The almost mushroomy element of the aftertaste is quite different and fits the aged character well. Nicely done. Interesting enough that I may try the Grand Marnier version despite the price point for a 500 ml bottle.
