Pours a pitch black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells wonderfully of roasted, caramel malt and citrus hops, with a good bit of peat and leather coming through as well, along with just a hint of licorice and pine. Taste is a fantastic balance of roasted, caramel malt, citrus hops, peat and pine, with hints of grapefruit, grass/herbs, leather and licorice. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some citrus, peat and pine notes lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.
What a fantastic beer with a perfect balance of flavors, the roasted malt, peat, leather and licorice harmonizing very well and being balanced nicely by the piney, bitter citrus hops. All the flavors just complement each other very well here, without anything feeling overpowering at all, proving once again that Buddelship is probably the best German maker of barrel-aged beers. What a fantastic concept anyway! A Single Malt Scotch barrel-aged Black IPA? Never heard of it and executed absolutely beautifully here.
