With the base similar to an Irish stout, this surprisingly smooth IPA starts malty sweet, transitions to a dry cacao flavor with a touch of roast coffee

Straight up, this is a good Canadian dark ale (Black IPA), to my palate. The nose is citrusy and floral eking from a roasted malt base. Taste hits with that bitter roast (similar to the mild I reviewed before), but its bitterness fits with this style more - given the dryness that it brings to the table. Citrusy hops fill in from the mid-palate, completing the tie back to the nose. Medium body and feel promote another sip quicker than is needed. Pretty well done.
