A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high dense off white head.
S: Moderate aromas of caramel syrup are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has lots of flavors of caramel syrup along with underlying notes of coffee.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes just like a caramel macchiato. It's like drinking Starbucks in a can that also provides a buzz.

Four pack copped from Total Wine and More in West Orange. Pours a deep amber hue with extreme frothing and a very pungent caramel aroma. Sweet, cloying flavor that strongly mimics cinnamon rolls and nougat. Hits hard. Loses points for lack of drinkability. Beware of taste-crushing beers...

Looks more like a iced coffee than a stout but the nitro did make for a nice full inch of fluffy head. Smell is intense like a sugary sweet cold coffee drink with plenty of vanilla and chocolate goodness. WOW what a sweet flavor! Hits you over the head with caramel and milk sugars rounds out a bit with some cocoa and cold coffee and finishes heavy bread and slight alcohol twang.

Not sure if I would buy it again when I first saw it I thought it would compare to Mokah but its more like Crème Brûlée sticky and sweet. Worth a try if you love sweet beers!

A dessert beer for dessert beers...

Sweeter than most beers I categorize as dessert beers, the nitro always gets me. I love pouring them and drinking them, definitely better than most other carbonation methods.

Anyway, it’s creamy texture fits the sweet taste, but, for beer I expect something a tad more balanced. This wasn’t necessarily balanced but it was a very tasty ending to a nice Sunday evening.

A - Looks like a sludgy glass from the poo water treatment plant (aside from the creamy white layer of head resting on top). Lots of viscosity on the sides of the glass with lots of legs. (but the color ... )

S - Coffee, caramel, and cream dominate the nose. I'm not a coffee drinker but the aroma is intoxicating on the senses.

T - Nice flavor intensity from start to finish: Bold caramel, caramel cream / cream, delicate coffee, and delicate dark roasted malt with light char and finishes on the sweeter side with a tiny bit of alcohol poking through.

M - Soft, silky, and thick on the palate and with a slight sugar residue on the lips.

O - I'm always impressed with Southern Tier's Blackwater Series and this doesn't disappoint. Definitely worth checking out.

On nitro tap at Southern Tier Brewing in Lakewood, NY.

This one pours a golden amber color, with a small but fluffy head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like sugary sweet caramel, coffee creamer, vanilla, breadiness, and frosting.

This is extremely sweet, but that's what Southern Tier has been doing for a very long time, and I kind of expect it. It's not teeth-melting, but it's close. The creamy taste from the nitro does help round this out - I think it would honestly taste sweeter without that.

This is creamy, rich, and with not much booziness. It drinks quite sweet, which makes it a slower sipper.

This is decent enough, but too sweet for me to want to try again.

Had to create an account for this...I check reviews a lot for beers. I almost exclusively drink stouts/porters and the options are often odd anywhere you go.

I love coffee stouts. I love vanilla stouts. I like a good desert beer. On paper, everything about this beer seemed up my alley. I checked the reviews - 90/100 looks great.

Imagine my disappointment when I tried this beer.... it is SICKLY sweet. It's nigh undrinkable. All of the notes are way too strong, like I'm drinking a caramel syrup.

The look and feel are pretty typical of a nitro stout. The smell definitely is the first warning of the god awful flavor.

My girlfriend has the same taste as me - if anything she's even more into this flavor profile. I witheld my opinion as not to bias, and when I talked with her about it later, she basically completely agreed - despite sounding like everything we'd want, it was extremely difficult to finish. we have 2 more cans sitting in our fridge and neither dares to touch them .

Please let this be a warning to stout drinkers - Unless you have a real sweet tooth and what I described as negatives are literally up your alley, you may just be disgusted by this beer.

S: sweet caramel, grain, vanilla, coffee
T: sweet & quite boozy; caramel, coffee, toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, lactose
F: fuller body, very syrupy, could use more carbonation, alcohol sneaks up on you
O: not as good as expected, especially with all the high reviews

Southern Tier Brewing Co. "Nitro Iced Macchiato"
9.6 fl. oz. can, "BEST BY 12/01/21" and sampled on 03/18/21
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I thought that beyond being a good dessert beer this might be a good breakfast beer, so here it is at 10 am and I'm going to give it a shot. It's poured a hazy chestnut brown colored body beneath an inch of densely creamy off-white foam. The aroma is sweetly caramelish with a touch of coffee and vanilla. AHH! What's this, "natural coffee flavor added"? Well I guess I shouldn't complain as I knew there'd be some flavorings, I just didn't expect it to be the coffee. Anyway, it looks great and it smells great so that's half the battle right there. ... ... ... I think the flavor is great as well, although the alcohol does come through. It's a rich combination of caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and coffee. It reminds me of tiramisu. It's smooth and creamy in the mouth as you might expect, and medium bodied. All in all I feel this is on par with their other dessert beers and it's really up to personal taste as to whether this is your cup of tea or not.

On tap nitro

A- clear and golden color, creamy two finger white head with great retention

S- vanilla cream, coffee, caramel, butterscotch, smells like a macchiato

T- sweet and creamy vanilla up front, followed by notes of caramel and toffee, earthy coffee. The finish gives more vanilla with a creamy coffee finish

M- medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and silky, slightly warming finish

Pours light amber with a 2 inch thick, creamy white head, which lasts. Heavy lacing to the end.

Aroma of coffee, cream, marshmallow, caramel.

Taste follows nose: Coffee, cream, marshmallow, caramel. Alcohol well hidden.

Full bodied, thick and creamy, light carbonation. Sweet, creamy finish.

Amazing! More like cappuccino than beer.

9.6 fluid ounces per can, so two cans just made it into a clear Imperial pint glass. There's not much head nor lacing, but that's common among high ABV brews. The smell is like a French Vanilla Macchiato without the steam. The color is a dense but bright brown, maybe like pancake syrup caramel. The taste is a sweet vanilla coffee with no evidence of a high ABV. Yes, warmed, this could pass as a French Vanilla latte. Sadly, this version is on the flat side and that detracts from the overall. Maybe it's the milk solids, maybe it's the high ABV, maybe it's the coffee, or maybe any combination there of. The nitro just didn't hold up it's carbonating end. It's interesting, but not excellent.

Initially pours the color and consistency of coffee and cream. After it settles, there's a finger of head atop a light beige body. The nose has notes of both caramel and milk sugar.

The flavor tastes very much like one of those very expensive sugary "coffee" drinks from a place like Starbucks. The alcohol starts off muted but pokes through by the bottom of the glass.

This effort achieves its goal but I wonder if the goal is worth it.

Appearance:
A shaded, butterscotch brown with an ivory head of ultrafine microbubbles. Amazingly, it stratifies into 3 distinct layers when poured, bearing an uncanny resemblance to frothed milk floating on caramel-laden espresso. Long-lived lace with great retention.

Bouquet:
Smokey caramel and burnt sugar atop a wide basin of thoroughly toasted coffee.

Feel:
Full-bodied but so silky you’ll swear it’s in a lighter weight class. Inundated with invigorating nitrogen that insistently prods subtle flavors out of complacency.

Taste:
Powerful, black espresso wearing a thin shawl of smoked caramel and a crown of milky cream that poofs up in the aftertaste. Occasionally, a sweeter strand of silky caramel will seemingly stir loose from the bottom and drape itself gently across the tongue—just like the real thing!

Overall:
Leans towards bitter but its still sweeter than the beverage it's modeled after. If you’ve never had a real macchiato before, they’re unapologetically bitter. As it warms, the espresso aspect takes over in surprisingly balanced way.

Pours murky, dark tan in color with one inch head. Taste is liquid tiramisu, roasted coffee, lady fingers, and Whipped cream. Heavy body, sweet with moderate light carbonation. Liking this a little more than I thought I would. Reminds me of the great Italian dessert. Will get this again. Southern Tier makes excellent dessert beer.

L - Looks perfect as all nitro beers do. Pours with creamy brown and light tan swirls like an iced macchiato and settles into a light to medium cream brown with a perfect light tan head. A solid amount of lacing.
S - Tons of roasted coffee aroma along with sweet lactose and caramel
T - Follows the nose: roasted coffee along with caramel and sweet lactose/cream. Some mocha chocolate as well.
F - Medium to full bodied with minimal carbonation. Soft, creamy, but somewhat hollow like all nitro beers tend to feel
O - This is exactly what Southern Tier says it is: an iced macchiato. Incredibly delicious and well done.

From the bottom of the can: "BEST BY 12/01/21"

Appearance: The top head is very creamy textured and white with a nearly glass-like surface. Where the nitrogen rests under this head there is a light tan and off-white colored sub-head. The body of the beer is a deep, dark, ruby red and dark brown amber color. The head has good retention and it leaves smooth sheets of lacing.

Aroma: It has a big, bold, prominent coffee aroma. There is a strong toffee note to the beer and a similarly strong caramel aroma. It smells a lot like walking into a candy store or a coffee shop that makes really sweet coffees. It smells fantastic and I would buy a candle of this.

Taste: Up front there is caramel. Towards the middle there is alcohol and a bit of toffee that contains both bitter and sweet components. It is a very sweet beer that layers on even more sweetness as the beer is consumed.

Mouthfeel: the beer is full bodied and thick on the tongue. It is exceptionally smooth and coats the palate easily. Drinkability is medium given the strong sweetness to the beer and the noticeable alcohol presence. There is a mild bitterness that is akin to burnt toffee.

Overall: The can states that this is an "IMPERIAL WHITE MILK STOUT" and that it is an "ALE WITH NATURAL COFFEE FLAVOR ADDED." For what is typically considered a golden stout or a white stout it is darker than most, but still not dark enough to be a full-on stout. The beer has a fantastic aroma which makes the drinking experience very enjoyable. It also has a great feel on the palate. The flavors in the beer are good but the coffee was completely absent in anything but the aroma. The beer tasted more like a mixture of sweet toffee and caramel candies than the advertised "Iced Machiato." The can also states that this contains "ALC 10.0% BY VOL." and it is noticeable but this is expected given such a high ABV. As a whole the beer is outstanding and very well made, but coffee lovers might be a little let down when they taste the beer. I would drink it again and I would recommend it to those who enjoy sweeter beers.

Surprisingly, this is a golden stout - albeit a shade darker than most. Still much, much paler and clearer than a regular stout.

Nose is incredibly inviting, filled with roasty coffee tones. While you can tell it's going to be sweet, with notes of caramelized brown sugar and vanilla, the emphasis is absolutely on the coffee.

Much sweeter on the palate, but not as sweet as some of the other Blackwater Series. If it doesn't taste exactly like an iced macchiato, it tastes incredibly similar. I'm enjoying it more with each sip.

Unbelievably easy drinking for a 10% ABV brew. The nitro certainly has a part to play in that.

Best by 12/2/21. 12oz nitro-can poured into a tulip. Pours a dark brown with auburn and mahogany hues; creamy white head that fades leaving nice retention and lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of sweet vanilla frosting. Some coffee and chocolate. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose. The vanilla probably leads the way but the coffee comes through as well. More chocolate in the mix. Nice blend of all three. Moderate sweetness. Low to zero bitterness. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's everything that you'd expect from a nitro beer and more. It's full-bodied with low to no carbonation. It's creamy, smooth and easy to drink. This is dangerously drinkable stuff because it almost doesn't drink like a beer at times, and I mean that in a good way.

This is a great brew. It fits perfectly with what you'd expect from Southern Tier. It's rich, bold and has a "dessert beer" vibe going on. They nailed the nitro aspects. It leaves you wanting more. There's something about this one that I really like.

Poured hard from a nitro can into a tulip pint glass, eventually forming a finger of creamy nitro head. Head took quite a while to fade. Medium, hazy brown color that let's through plenty of light. Sweet smell, somewhat reminiscent of a macchiato. I don't often drink macchiatos, but the taste does kinda remind me of one. A little bit of coffee flavor with accompanying bitterness, but mostly sweet, almost caramel-like, flavor. Creamy nitro feel slowly fades to a medium bodied feel with pretty smooth carbonation. Reminds me of the namesake, but not the best of the Blackwater series.

Pours a nice medium brown. Nitrous carbonated. Smells like fresh coffee. Tastes creamy vanilla toffee with a very sweet coffee, I was expecting it to be bitter but it's actually quite the contrary. Very lightly carbonated with a semi-thick viscosity. Overall one of the best if not THE best coffee beers I've ever had.

Four pack 9.6oz cans for $11.99, best buy date 12/02/21. Pours a medium brown with a bit of dense tan head, but not as much as I expected. Aroma and taste are very reminiscent of one of the General Mills International instant coffees my grandparents used to drink in the 80's. That sounds bad, but it's really not; it's actually delicious. The nitro keeps it creamy feeling and the 10% ABV is masked better than in some of Southern Tier's other high alcohol concoctions.
