Sail Away Scotch Ale

Poured into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a one finger khaki head that dissipated to a thin film with light lacing. Looks nice. Aroma of dry caramel and biscuit malt, dates, hints of dried plum and lightly smoked peat. Flavor is dry caramel and biscuit malt, raisins, dates, a hint of dried plum and light peat smoke; getting a little deeper in the finish. A touch of hop bitterness with the lingering, light peat smoke in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. The malty caramel and fruit notes are spot on to style, but this Scotch ale was a little light on the smokiness in the peat. The malt base is pleasant, but not that complex. I liked this one, but it could use a little more flavor depth to shine.
