We've hopped this beer with hops from Australia and New Zealand: Galaxy, Waimea, and Orbit. These juicy, tropical hops overpower the roasted notes from our dark malt. Think chocolate-covered fruit topped with a sweet tropical puree. Or don't think at all, because this baby clocks in at 7.8% ABV.

T: roasted grain and milk chocolate through the middle, then mostly coffee to the finish; mild bitterness at the end;

Nice ebony brew, topped with a light beige head, thick and with excellent retention.

I can smell the hops from a foot away...and I don't mind! Grapefruit, tropical fruit, slightly dank; I admit, I'm a sucker for Galaxy. Aroma alone, you'd never guess this brew has "black" in the name; and chocolate malts are hiding from the hop onslaught!

Flavor follows: while there's some nice chocolate - and even coffee - from the malts, hops are still front and center. A beautiful blend overall. There are a handful of black IPAs that stand out to me: Dark Penance and Wookie Jack come to mind. This one is just as good.

Very lively with moderate sting. Good body; very drinkable for near-DIPA strength.

OLBC nailed it: a black IPA should be an IPA first and foremost. Unlike others, this one isn't particularly roasty; it leans toward smooth chocolate instead.

32oz growler from the brewery. Pours a dark brownish black color with a small amount of light, tan head. Some lacing. The aroma is juicy tropical fruits. Some citrus as well. The taste is tropical and citrus fruits again along with a light hint of berries. Light roasted malts, espresso and dark chocolate more towards the end. More hops at the finish. This one showcases the hops very well with the chocolate and coffee sitting nicely in the background. Light body with very little alcohol presence. Overall, I'm very impressed by this one and need more of it. Fantastic Black IPA.

L: Jet black with a dark tan creamy head; big thick lacing.
S: Big hop aromas that omit citrus and tropical notes; backed by roasted malts.
T: Little bit chocolaty but also very very fruity. This is the best balanced black IPA I've ever had. I can't say enough good things about how well the hops work in this big dark beer.
F: Perfect body--it feels like you're drinking an IPA. The carb is on point and the 7.8% ABV is not apparent.
O: This beer blew me a way; it was a total surprise. I can take or leave black IPAs but i really love this one. Outer Light now has my attention.
