Legend has it that the man who invented the double IPA did so accidentally. While brewing his usual IPA, something happened and he realized that he was going to blow right by his intended starting gravity. He had extracted more sugars from the grain than usual and he was going to have a much bigger beer than planned. Maybe he crushed the grain too fine, maybe he had an extra vigorous boil, maybe Ninkasi felt frisky. Whatever the case, he was looking at a potential 8 or 9% ABV beer. Something had to be done, and quickly!

He added more hops.

The Imperial IPA was born.

In a completely unrelated note (we said, as we whistled nervously), Outer Light would like to announce the release of Tres Palms Triple IPA. Named after a big wave surfing spot in Puerto Rico, Tres Palms washes wave after wave of hops over your titillated tongue. We know our market and we’re happy to give you what you want – high ABV and more hops.

How many hops? Over nine pounds per barrel. For the sake of comparison, our year-round (and delicious) Subduction IPA contains 2.5 pounds per barrel.

How much alcohol? A daunting 11.5% ABV.

We can hear your gasp through our computer screen.

What does nine pounds of hops per barrel of beer taste like? Come and see for yourself.

Surprisingly opaque brew, orange, topped with a nice off-white head with good retention. NE-style? About right.

You can smell the hops across the room while they're pouring. More subdued in the glass. Pine, candied orange, grapefruit, pineapple, and a lot of sweet malt.

Flavor follows the nose, along with mango and a noticeable alcohol presence. It comes across in the flavor, but no heat or burn.

Reminiscent of Hi-Res.
