Cream ale with vanilla and brown sugar added.

We're exited to announce that we teamed up Young Buns Doughnuts of Mystic to release Young Buns Streusel Doughnut Cream Ale, a one-off release inspired by the gourmet doughnuts produced at the Mystic bakery.

This is the third collaboration between OLBC and Young Buns sister company Sift Bake Shop and owners Adam and Ebbie Young. Outer Light has a proud history of teaming up with local farmers, artisans and restaurants to create culinary inspired beers.

“Any time we get a chance to work with passionate local producers, we jump at the opportunity” said Outer Light co-owner Matt Ferrucci. “We are thrilled to work with the team at Young Buns Doughnuts to bring what started as a fun idea over doughnuts to a delicious adult beverage”

Medium amber colored body, clear; fair carbonation; nice head, one-finger thick and lasting, a bit sticky inside the glass. Nice sweet, grainy aroma; not overly complex. Excellent flavor, sweet; vanilla and brown sugar evident; moderate hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; mildly coarse on the palate; sticky; mild warmth.

I suppose one would call this a pastry cream ale. The can label indicates vanilla and brown sugar are used. Their presence is evident yet not over-powering. The beer is pretty tasty although it also seems a bit watery overall. A bit too sweet for my personal tastes, but I wouldn't turn down another one.

Good head production and decent retention. Almost perfectly crystal clear body through which you can easily read close text. Light scattered lacing.

Very pleasant aroma. While the vanilla and brown sugar are noticeable, it doesn't come across as a pastry beer, instead presenting more as a lightly flavored cream ale. Primarily noble hops, along with a touches of pine and grass, sit atop crackery pale malt notes. It very much smells like a beer, and a darn nice one, at that.

Flavor follows. It's not overly sweet, despite the doughnut inspiration, with tasting notes of white grape, cracker, honeysuckle, grass, lemon, toast, sugar, very light caramel, and vanilla. Neither the vanilla nor brown sugar are particularly strong, but they do add to the overall flavor profile.

Very drinkable, with a medium body that punches a bit above its weight class at only 5.6% ABV. Still, due in part to the very approachable flavor profile, it's near crushable should you be so inclined.

This is a lovely beer, but I suspect some people will be disappointed. A cream ale is a very light base beer for a doughnut-inspired concoction, so it's fair to set one's expectations in the realm of a modest ABV pastry/dessert beer. This is not that beer. This is a lightly flavored, easy drinking, fairly traditional (and very well made) cream ale that just so happens to have a few extra ingredients. I likely would have been happy with more of a dessert beer, but I'm more than happy with the way this beer presents as-is.
