Groton is a community with a strong connection to the sea. Nautical folklore and sailor stories are woven into the local fabric of our community. We’ve heard a few of those tales spun over a few beers over the years that pay homage to our region’s long and storied relationship with the ocean.
Some have heard of the legend of Ledge Lighthouse. For those who haven’t, please keep scrolling…
Located on the Thames River at the mouth of New London Harbor, Ledge Lighthouse has stood overlooking the passing of nautical time since 1909. Local lore claims it is haunted by an early caretaker named Ernie, who has mischievously taunted the subsequent lighthouse keepers until the beacon became fully automated in 1987.
The narrative claims that the final Coast Guard officer to man the lighthouse left the following notation in the keeper’s log during his final watch: "Rock of slow torture. Ernie's domain. Hell on earth—may Ledge Lighthouse shine on forever because I’m through. I will watch it from afar while drinking a brew."
Ernie’s Lighthouse Lager is a refreshing and crushable light lager, designed to accompany a fishing excursion, a day at the beach, or to be enjoyed over a few tales of nautical folklore of your own. Cheers!
