Slava Pils is an all-wheat pilsner dedicated to Ukraine, "the breadbasket of Europe". Today we brew with an international coalition of Polish Hops and German wheat malt.
Like any good pilsner, Slava is lagered cold and refreshes with crisp Lubelski hop character. It celebrates the glory (“Slava!") of Ukraine and all profits go to their aid through Razom.

From a can.
This pours with fantastic clarity. Lots of tight h bubbling. Pleasing aroma, with low hops and malts lending some faint grassy notes. Sip is clean, and finishes tightly.

6x12 fl oz pull-tab cans (with labels! - looks like Live Oak is actually starting to give a shit about their packaging) nabbed at the brewery for $12.00 USD plus tax.
4.3% ABV. All wheat pilsner brewed with Polish hops and German wheat. "Slava is lagered cold and refreshes with crisp Lubelski hop character."
Pours a clear vibrant yellow gold, obviously filtered. Not what one necessarily would imagine an "all wheat" beer would look like, but it does look nice for a pilsner. I wonder how they broke up all the gummy wheat? Rice hulls?
AROMA: Cookie. Faint lavender from Lubelski hops. Floral aromatics. Vanillin. Vanilla pastry. Odd for a pilsner, but generally inviting.
TASTE: Faint dry spice mingles with cookie-like bakery flavours and subdued vanillin. I don't get much from the wheat, nor would I know this was 100% wheat if I tried it in a blind tasting. In any case, it doesn't taste like a traditional pilsner by any stretch, but there is some Saaz-like spice in there I suppose.
TEXTURE: Midway between dry and wet. Not smooth, but not coarse. A bit scratchy on the palate. Not unrefreshing. Not the crisp clean easy drinking texture you want in a pilsner. Not soft, surprisingly. Well carbonated, if not overcarbonated.
Not oily, gushed, astringent, hot, fusel, boozy, or grating.
OVERALL: I applaud the experimentation and it's neat they pulled off an all wheat beer, but to call it a pilsner is a bastardization. It's a nice enough brew for its weirdness, but I wouldn't rank it amongst Live Oak's best efforts. Not bad for a charity case beer, but not one I'd voluntarily buy again at $12+ per sixer.

This was my favorite of the three pilsner beers I had this evening at Live Oak.
Poured from tap into a tall pint glass. Clear light yellow color with with excellent foamy white head and beautiful curtain lacing. Grassy, grainy somewhat rustic smell and taste. Fruity and refreshing up front with a nice bitter bite at the end. A very flavorful and refreshing pilsner. One of the best I have had recently.
