Draft at the brewery,
Thick creamy off white head with good retention, lacing, semi dark but very clear auburn deep copper color, much lighter than i expected
Nose is more Schwarz like, fair roasted malt notes, a little chocolate, coffee, mild fruity esters from the malts, more earthy almost smoky coffee, faint spices
Taste starts a bit creamy with a coffee and cream character, mild roasted malts, baking spices, hint of malt derived fruity esters, dark biscuits, little bready, light spicy hop bitterness, semi soft dry finish
Mouth is med bod, med carb that is slightly prickly
Overall ok, good lagering but didn't have the dark malt bite i was expecting, a bit light on flavor

Tasted on tap at the Live Oak Brewery & Taproom.
Crystal clear beer with dark brown and ruby colors. Off white head. Some roast and even smoke in the nose, but not much else. Roasted malt flavor with a light touch. Later in the palate herbal hops become prominent, but there is a smoky backbone that could convince me this recipe had some smoked malt. Medium body, moderate carbonation and a sweet finish. This is an OK beer, but is not as crisp and clean as I believe the style calls for.

On tap at Live Oak Brewing. Notes from 08/03/2024.
On tap into a pint glass.
L- Dark brown.
S- Coffee, some hops.
T- A lot of flavor. Light roasted, malt, caramel, noble hops. Clean taste.
F- A bit less than medium thickness. Fairly light considering all the flavor.
O- Great beer. It's the best Schwarzbier I've had.

A: dark brown murky color with dark ruby red
S: huge smoked malt, burnt wood, meat, sweet malt, caramel. Smiley and meaty
T: smoke up front. Campfire, bacon, caramel, brown sugar, sweet berries. A faint earthy bitterness
M: medium. Small carbonation
O: real nice beer here. The smoke is present, but mellow and harmonized. It's a lighter beer that can work in summer or winter

Had this on tap at the old brewery during a tour. An amazing, delicious beer that is exemplary of this very under-appreciated and under-rated style. I've had several schwarzbiers before and after this but nothing stands up to Live Oak, it's the best.

Excellent example of a vastly underrated style. Roasted and toasted yet it is easy to pound a few of these back without blinking an eye. My first Schwarzbier which has lead to me seeking out more to try yet still the best I've had.

4/1…served on tap in Austin. pours very dark brown, almost black. light foam. Light chocolate malt taste, coffee in there too. Thin mouthfeel, almost watery. Good.
