Also known as Helles Rauchlager
Heller Rauch is a pale, smoky lager. Beechwood-smoked barley flavor is punctuated by a perfect Noble hop character. Fermentation with German lager yeast leaves the beer dry, but well-rounded. The special harmony of these elements creates a very refreshing and unique lagerbier.
OG: 11ºP
IBU: 20

On-draught @ Live Oak during their Bamberg On The Colorado event. $3 for a half pour.
Lacks obvious smokiness but it's a lovely helles with tuned in subtle sweetness and an apt grassy and floral hop profile.
Quite well-balanced and devilishly drinkable if a bit shallow and restrained.

Live Oak Heller Rauch
Look:
Deep straw to pale gold in color with a bright white head and nearly brilliant clarity. Head has moderate retention and a small bubble texture.
Aroma:
Beechwood smoke hits you first but that is punctuated by a moderate amount of grassy, spicy noble hop aromas. Clean Lager fermentation with no esters or any off-flavors.
Taste:
Melange of smoke and noble hops play well together and that’s the bulk of the flavor. Otherwise it is a clean and dry beer.
Overall:
The best of both worlds here. You get the great hop character and dryness of a Helles with the great smoky flavor of a Rauchbier.

(From notes, sampled 26-Oct-14) 4 oz cask pour into a wine glass at Jester King Brewery. Lightly hazy, bright orange golden with a slight haze, no head. Big bouquet of savory, smoky malt. Smooth, sweet cereal malt, soft, salty, earthy smoke and hints of herbal hops. Light body with little carbonation. Light, flavorful and satisfying - perfect on a sunny afternoon in the Austin countryside.
