Brewery says of this one: "half aged in rye whiskey barrels for four months." Handsome dark amber with a fine-grained cap of foam. Mouthfeel is on the creamy side. This is so rich, so spicy, so tangy and boozy. Great aroma of those barrels.
The rye flavors don't exactly stand out, but there is a resiny and slightly woody flavor that's sensational. Modest bitterness but enough to balance all the sweet malt. This is the way you'd wish your Barley Wine would turn out. One of the best strong brews I've had in a long time.
Great spicy notes, and smooth liquid gold on the tongue. On tap at The Public House in La Jolla.
