In 2017, we had a batch of Hopocalypse Triple IPA (Black Label) that didn’t quite ferment and we couldn’t simply dump it. We gave it a second chance by aging it in Highwest rye whiskey barrels. The high gravity batch pulled vanilla and rye spice from the oak, a touch of caramel flavor, and a subtle bitterness lingering from the once mighty Triple IPA.

Had this at that Drake's location in an industrial area the night before dipa festival I believe. This was pouring. The place is hella loud with its signage and dj music. Like damn, let me chill. Anyhoo, here I am over 8 months later, writing the first review for this beer. You're welcome.
Pours a brown color. 1/4" off white head. The aroma is pretty strong in the hops, malt, and booze departments. Definitely the weakest attribute of this beer.
The taste rights the ship. The hopping rate doesn't come out as much in the taste, but even in the mouth feel, it comes across smoother than expected. This ain't no drunk dial. Good malt impression, earthy but not so substantial it becomes weighty nor flabby. The booziness in the nose isn't as strong in the mouth feel, did a pretty good job at keeping a substantial amount of booze heat from burning it on down. This one took on parts of American, English and barrel aged barleywine. The rye sweetness seems to counteract the booze well here. I don't drink too many new barleywines, but this was the rare occasion and it was pretty good. Mucho mambo.
