Starts with a promising malty tang. Things get ugly fast. Searing bitterness, which does mellow slightly after a while, leaving only a bad taste of burnt metal. Carbonated cardboard is the other flavor.

Malty on the lips but fairly flat in the mouth. Dark red brown in the glass with minimal head. Light body. Pretty poison.

On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach. One of the most offensively bitter beers I've had in a long time. The usual nearly meaningless IBU rating is 50. Most disappointing Drake's beer I've had, as they usually quite genteel in their handling of hops, for instance the hugely hoppy Aroma Coma.

Had on-tap at The Lanesplitter in Berkeley.

Pours a deep red/amber, appropriate for the style. Had a one-finger white head that left lots of lace and retained fairly well. Clarity was nice too.

Smells of grapefruit citrus and resin at the back. I've noticed a lot of the Drake's beers I've had have all had plenty of resin, and this is no exception. I'm happy that it isn't as strong as it is in a lot of other offerings from them though. Malty sweetness is in the background and less pronounced.

Tastes crisply bitter at first with a healthy helping of grapefruit citrus, but then moves to a little bit too much resin than I'd like. Malts don't offer enough sweetness to bail the beer out, but the resin thankfully isn't so unpleasant that it gets in the way of the good citrus and softly sweet malt. Tone it down Drake's, add more of the pure fruity hops! I guess I just don't have as much of a taste for their styles.

Mouthfeel is nicely full yet crisp, which is exactly what the style demands. I really liked the carbonation in this one and enjoyed the slight dryness at the finish. Drinkability is hurt by the resin being a bit too emphasized, but it's still solid. Definitely helped a lot by the pure citrus character at the start as well.

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a creamy off-white head and some sticky lacing.

S: A light hoppiness to the nose provides some definite fruit character and maybe even a bit of woodiness. A strange nose that doesn't really match up with the flavors.

T: Lightly bitter and buttery with some decent hop flavor. Not all that malty, but nicely sweet and not very much of the usual caramel flavors.

M: The body is medium with a light to medium carbonation to it.

D: This is just a strange beer all-around and one that I was not too crazy about. Maybe worth another try, but not something I'm in a hurry to get my hands on.
