A fan favorite, Jolly Rodger has been resurrected to pillage and plunder once more! This huge, malty, Imperial Barrel Aged Stout/Barleywine blend features a special Kenyan coffee from our friends at Mother Tongue Coffee in Oakland. Despite its 16.3% ABV, this sea monster drinks relatively reserved, with smoky roasted malts and coffee fruit aromatics up front fading to coffee and honey and a hint of heat on the tongue.

My first Jolly Rodger in more than 13 years, though this one couldn’t be more different. 375ML bottle.
Very dark. Very still. Nose is robust: burnt roast, mild bourbon, booze, char, dark fruit.
Jolly Rodger 2024 – what the hell is this? Of the stout/barleywine copulations I’ve sampled, this one is the oddest. Very heavy, like Black Tuesday + Central Waters 3 yr. Barleywine. The coffee identifies as heavy roast, with undertones of toast, char, & that dark fruit, the last of which is intertwined harshly with the bourbon. Mid-palate is walking in puddles of booze. Light rye spiciness that might go unnoticed but for the label. There are fleeting moments of smaller tastes: raisin, wood, brioche. Heavy. I think I’m drunk ten ounces in.
This evokes as many mixed feelings as the best Wang Chung album. Violently tasty, blood thick, heavily barreled, this brushes up against greatness then dances away. Still: an excellent brew.

2024 vintage
This is my first beer from Drake’s and it sounds like a fun one to start off with. I’ve seen plenty of Stout/Barleywine blends before but I think this is the first time I’ve seen coffee added to the mix. Let’s pop ot open and find out what it has to offer
Pours an opaque medium brown with less than a finger of light tan head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing
I’m not getting too much Barleywine character in the nose but it’s still really nice. I’m picking up on aromas of burnt coffee beans, smooth oak, cocoa powder, vanilla bean, smoky tobacco, black cherry, molasses, burnt caramel, poached pear, light bourbon, and roasted peanut
It comes through with the sweeter notes typical of a Barleywine more in taste, but I honestly think I prefer the profile the nose presented. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting raisin, brown sugar, molasses, black cherry, medium roast coffee, vanilla bean, milk chocolate, burnt caramel, apple skin, smooth oak, and light walnut. The swallow brings notes of burnt coffee beans, molasses, charred oak, raisin, vanilla bean, candied peanut, cocoa powder, black cherry, burnt sugar, and poached pear
A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes mostly dry with the slightest boozy burn but drinks well below its abv
Oh yeah, this one is awesome. The coffee dominates but in the best way possible
