On tap at the barrel house.
A: Pours a dirty pondwater copper; it is completely opaque with swirly floaties and a limp, short-lived off-white head. Not all that appealing.
S: Strong bourbon and vanilla, with little else. The barrel clearly took over the beer. But there is a mild caramel scent.
T: Treacly vanilla over bourbon, with some oak. This is thin bourbon juice. For whatever reason, the base beer seems to have thinned or faded out and been overwhelmed by the barrel. It's boozy in the finish.
M: In addition to being boozy, the finish is watery. It's an unpleasant mix. I can't find much in the way of redeeming character here.
O: I'm pulling hard for these guys to get their barrel program together, but so far, it's hit-and-miss, mostly miss. This is in the latter category. I got their 3 (?) oz taster and contemplated not even finishing it.

A - Served a cloudy amber-orange color with a thin finger of frothy off-white head. The head faded fairly quickly leaving behind some decent lace.
S - Aroma is a mix of Bourbon with some oak and vanilla with some strong sweet wheat with some caramel and a touch of bread.
T - Starts off with some Bourbon with some sweet wheat, toasted caramel malts, and some vanilla. Through the middle some oak comes through with some mellowing sweetness and a bit of residual brown sugar and booze. The finish is a mix of Bourbon, oak, vanilla, wheat, and a bit of booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a big warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. The Bourbon really had a great effect on the wheatwine. It is super rich and bold but nicely balanced overall.

This was my second wheatwine, if I’m not mistaken, so I’m still new to the style. On tap at the Bloodhound during SF Beer week, 2012.
Delicious. It poured a cloudy brownish color with thin foam. There’s a strong ‘Scotch ale’ aroma to this—sweet, with roasted coconut notes. Flavor is exceptionally smooth, with the sweet maltiness (coconut notes) and a boozy kick at the end. Too strong to not share, so good you’ll wish you didn’t.

I had this on tap at Beer Revolution in Oakland; my first wheatwine.
A: Pours a swampy, murky plum-hued brown, with very little head off the pour becoming solely a bright white ringlet gripping the glass. Not much lacing to speak of, but rather legs like a port.
S: Overflowing with whiskey heat and oak. Sweet malt notes and dark fruits (plums and raisins) are distinguishable under the initial alcohol and woody punch. The nose is very much like a BA barleywine. Two people sitting next to me at Beer Revolution ordered this after catching whiffs of mine.
T: My palate is not as developed as others, so I don't think I could pick this one out as a wheatwine in a blind taste test; it tastes very much like a barleywine, but a superb BW at that. Extremely complex. Like the nose, the whiskey and oak jostle your buds right out of the gate, but the subtleties of the sweet malts, dark fruits, and spiciness pull through the dense BA haze. Has a boozy and sweet, slightly hoppy finish.
M: Creamy and warm. Just perfect for a cold and rainy night in Oakland.
