@Drakes Brewing, San Leandro, CA

App- A darker beer especially from the strong ales used in the blend on this. A bit of a dark brown with shades of garnet and yellows. A small 1/4" head that was a light tan was there and gone. A couple dots of cling.

Smell- It took on more of the scotch ale than the stout with more malts and caramel and a bit of a candy like aroma with some cherry and plums. A bit prickly from the bourbon and a touch lite all around.

Taste- It was a pretty tasty beer. The treatment was a bit off but still loved the idea of the blending on this one. A good scotch ale mixed with a stout was a nice idea but hard to balance everything in the glass. A bit too much sweet and lacked punch of the barrels. Need a bit of thickness.

Mouth- A solid light medium body with a perfect carbonation. Not too low and syrupy and not too prickly.

Drink- Was excited to try this. Was better than average but just needs more polish behind it.

On tap at the barrel house in San Leandro on 8/4/2012.

Listed on the board as a blend of Bourbon Barre Imperial Stout and Brandy Barrel Scotch Ale. Marked as 9.6%.

A: Pours a pitch black body in the taster glass, with a small, short-lived off-white beige head.

S: Smells of vinegar, caramel, grapes, roast -- this is clearly soured, though not marked with an (S) on the board. I'm guessing this is a victim of Drake's Accidental Flora Ultra-Cultured Kick (DAFUCK).

T: Tastes, as the nose implied, profoundly sour. The initial taste holds some promise of a scotch ale-imperial stout blend, with caramel, roast, and a touch of smoke. Bourbon barrels are evident, as is a brandy tartness; vanilla and oak are noted. The beer gradually segues into vinegar and finishes with a powerful acetic burn. Bleh.

M: Medium-bodied; I'm guessing this will thin out and get drier with time, but right now the bacteria haven't totally caught hold. I hate the burn in the finish.

O: Drake's barrel-aged beers are always entertaining; this is no exception. Did not finish.

On tap at Far Bar in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours an opaque super dark brown-black with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, wood, vanilla, and some slight vegetal aromas. Taste is of roasted malt, vanilla, bourbon, and wood. There is a slight tartness and mild roasty bitterness with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good barrel aged beer but the tartness is unexpected.
