A milk stout uses sugar made from cows milk to give the beer a sweet, creamy tone. Bristol breweries were once famous for brewing the best milk stouts around. For our take on the traditional recipe we’ve used copious amounts of chocolate malts and vanilla pods to create rich, velvety and satisfying dark beer. ABV may change.

Shared 500 ml bottle at local tasting, from Oddbins Aberdeen City. Black colour, small beige head. Aroma of chocolate cake with icing and vanilla. Smooth and pleasant to drink, again chocolate cake, lactose and vanilla sweetness, but not too much. Might well buy again.

L: Deep, dense and very dark. The jet black, oily look I love in a stout. Superb creamy, light, head that offers a strong visual look to the beer and lasts to the last mouthful.
S: Milk, fresh, vibrant
T: Super refreshing and reviving. A rich, dense and clean mouth feel. Roasted, smoked notes, nutty back notes with sweet upfront tones
O: One of my favourite milk stouts. Dense, dark, wintry but also light to drink with a lovely well balanced finish. Very drinkable and super refreshing. Highly recommended

330ml can.
L: Very dark mahogany, almost black. The massive, 4-finger, hazlenut-coloured, foaming head leaves spotty lacing and lasts forever.
S: Milky coffee.
T&F: Sweet, rich, roasted coffee. Velvet smooth. Finish is dry and long.
O: Fantastic milk stout. Perfect level of sweetness (i.e. it's sweet!) balanced by solid hoppy bitterness. The roasted malt is superb, adding depth but never tasting burned.

Can. Almost black. Thick light tan, dense and frothy head. Lacing present.
Latte aroma. Dark chocolate and light peat.
The labelled milk (chocolate) shake comes through upon tasting. Coffee prevalent.
Smooth yet only medium bodied.
Pleasant.

Wiper and True Milkshake Milk Stout 5.6%, 330ml can.

Independent brewery based in Bristol, England.

L4.25 - pitch black, good creamy head, moderately retained. Head floats down the side of the glass in an unsuaully pleasing way after a sip.
S4.5 - incredibly rich. Chocolate notes really come through.
T4 Nice, but a bit less chocolate coming through on the palate than I expected from the nose
F4.25 Medium body and a smooth finish from the head. Wouldn't mind a bit more viscosity from this style.
O4 A solid milk stout. Note - says 'vegan friendly' on the can but contains milk lactose so be carefully if that's important to you.

Firstly, the Description below lists this as having ABV4.8%, but the bottle I have in front of me states 5.6%. I don't know what the protocol is at BA re: such a change, but I'll alert them to it, after reviewing it, in case the change is of consequence.
L- Effectively black, even held to a halogen lamp I see zero light through the bottom corner of the glass. Pous with a 1mm fine pale tan head that quickly clears.
S- Toasy, roasty, coffee notes.
T- Deep roast coffee (thought: I need to read the lable and see if it contains any! => nope), moderate sweetness balances it.
M- There is very low carbonation the mouth, as noted by another reviewer below, unusually little.
O- The deep roast flavour, and balancing sweet/richness are a sound combination, but it's quite let down by lack of carbonation.
330ml bottle. Bottles: 24.01.19 BB: 24.01.20 'Batch 71'. Bought from Harvey Nichols dept store, London SW1 £3.20
Notable ingredients: Barley, oasts, wheat, lactose.

Palate Contaminants: other beer

Color is super dark brown, letting through minimal light around the edge. Oddly, it has virtually no head, but there's a little lacing.

Lots of toasted barley on the nose. It really gets toward a wood smell, too, like some specialty wood you'd smoke meats with. Definitely sweet milk in there, almost like condensed milk. It's even a bit nutty.

It's absolutely overloaded with milk on the taste. (If you like to consume with a complement, try it with a milk chocolate bar.) Light chicory, leading even more toastiness. Maybe one could compare it favorably to Postum or Ovaltine, but with lightly charred barrel. Overall, the flavor would be very nice in a pipe tobacco.

A swish can't even bring out much carbonation. Weight is medium-light for the type. Virtually no alcohol detectable. Aftertaste is lightly sweet, and the balance is shifted more toward the barrel.

Pours a black color with very little head that fades away 30 seconds after finishing pour. Light to medium carbonation with tastes of milk, cookies, chocolate and coffee. Light to medium mouthfeel. I was expecting the mouthfeel to be a bit more heavy (well it's named milk shake after all) but it was even lighter on the mouthfeel than normal non-lactose stouts.

Bottle poured into 2/3 pint glass.

Quick review: I think this is the sweetest milk stout that I've tried. Pleasantly chocolatey with a thick mouthfeel. With a touch more alcohol and a little more complexity this would be a great dessert beer. As it is, this is pleasant but a bit one dimensional. Cheers

This beer could be good but the mouthfeel ruins the all thing. It's entirely flat. But I'll give you that, it has a milk mouthfeel. It also has a milk taste with light roasted notes. Actually it feels like I'm drinking milk, not beer.

On tap at Archea Brewery in Florence, IT. Tastes like Left Hand Milk Stout, but I prefer the cocoa malt character here. Only complaint is that the lactose steps up too much in the aroma.
