more a brown ale than a porter for me, either super light for the style or categorized incorrectly here, reddish brown in color, good transparency, and a tall foamy almost white head on it, airy and rising on the draft pour. this is really light on the toasted coconut, which works in two competing directions i think. on the one hand, i ordered this beer because i wanted the coconut, and its very minimal in the nose and taste, like, hardly there at all, and while there is a a slight warm coconut flavor here, its well behind even the lighter chocolate malt base, and never really amounts to what i was looking for. on the other hand though, a lot of coconut flavored beers have a tendency to get really sweet, too sugary to drink much of, or end up over flavored at the expense of the base beer, and taste like sunscreen. by keeping it light, this one avoids those pitfalls, so it goes both ways i guess. the base brown is simple but good, and the toasted aspect is there more than the coconut itself, but i think its cohesive, well integrated, and probably a whole lot more drinkable than it would have been if the coconut had been more heavy handed. a little anticlimactic, but not at all a bad beer. they should continue to refine this one and improve it batch to batch, its close to being a winner...

Pours a murky, muddy brown with a finger of khaki head. Head retention is okay, with very little lacing left behind. Aroma screams of toasted malts, with biscuit and toasted malts playing backup. Flavor profile walks a similar path with toasted coconut right at the forefront. Toasted and biscuit malts add a little depth, or more so, support for the coconut. Mouth feel is medium thick with a slippery smoothness. Overall, this beer goes down smooth, and the coconut and thinner feel is a large part of that. Despite drinking smooth, it does carry a bit of a presence.
