Pours black with a finger of caramel fizzy, foam that doesn't retain well. Aroma is apple sauce, cinnamon, pears, caramel, red grapes and roasty, toasty malts. While it doesn't smell heavy and boozy, it does come across as 'hot'. It comes across as g-ma's secret spiked apple sauce. Flavor profile is apple sauce, cinnamon, pears, grapes, toffee, and caramel. Roasty and toasty malts add a little darkness, but overall, it drinks pretty 'bright'. Heat comes via some light-colored liquor. Mouth feel is medium-thin with just a touch of graininess to the texture. Overall, this has to be one of the most intriguing barrel aged beers I've drank to date. It certainly features a bit of heat, but that heat isn't throat-burning whiskey heat, instead coming across like some sort of gin or light-colored liquor. Important note: unique tag says this was aged "in Tom Town's Royal Gold bourbon barrels for xxx months", but has very little bourbon notes. I'm taking off 0.25 from overall for this, in fairness of being totally open.

this is such unique beer, and its rad they partnered with this rad local distillery, it makes this brew quite the expression of kansas city, and it downright fantastic. the bottle is waxed and sexy, and i am glad i got to drink off of one, this is really different. the oak flavors the beer more than the spirit does i think, this is less sweet than a lot of these, and not so linear in the vanilla direction, more of a charcoal and toffee element to it from the whiskey, and a unique purity or high quality obviousness thats more a vibe than a flavor but a key part of this experience. i really get a lot of cocoa here, subtle coffee, roasted grain bitterness and nutty tones, with light suggestions of dried cherry, raisin, bran muffin, burnt toast, and the oak, which is wet and heavy in here. the booze is warming at the most, but pretty restrained in appearance for its strength. i could stand this being a little more lively in terms of carbonation, but i like its density and robust overall appeal. unique and enjoyable. they also did a version of this in local wine barrels that was excellent, but i liked this one just a bit bitter! worth picking up if you find it.
