BOTTLE: Brown glass. Branded red pry-off crown cap. Generally appealing label art with a mixture of English and Cyrillic. Best before: 20.09.2015. 500ml.
4.20% ABV.
Served cold into a pilsner glass in Sofia, Bulgaria, where it was purchased at a local market. Reviewed live as a pale ale per the label.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Half an inch in width. Off-white. Not as frothy or creamy as would be ideal, nor is its thickness particularly robust. Recedes within ~2-3 minutes, leaving no lacing.
BODY: Clear copper-gold of average vibrance. Clean, with no visible yeast.
Looks closer to a pale lager or pilsner than a pale ale, to be honest.
AROMA: The hop profile is rather poor - just generic floral hop notes, none of which come off particularly fresh. Buttery diacetyl off-notes plague the aroma. Aside from that, all I pick up on are generic pale malts. Don't expect any fresh citrus, juicy fruit, resinous notes, pine, hop oils, et al. in this beer.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Follows the aroma, though the hop profile is a bit more bitter than expected, further throwing off the balance. Still, at least there's a bit more to the hop profile than just floral notes. But the bitterness is pretty rough - especially in the third act and on the finish. Imbalanced and poorly built, with the flavour profile riddled by diacetyl. Hop varietals were poorly chosen. It's as shallow and simple as a pale ale can be.
TEXTURE: Overcarbonated, but not sharp or biting. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied. Has too much weight and heft on the palate for its subpar depth of flavour.
This mouthfeel isn't suited to the style, and fails to elevate this beer. The buttery feel of it does bring out the diacetyl, to its detriment.
OVERALL: It's a subpar pale ale in every respect, though it's reasonably drinkable and does disguise its ABV well. The overcarbonation is what prevents this from being as drinkable as it'd need to be to be a cheap guzzling beer. The taste will disappoint even the casual pale ale drinker, and the hop profile is a mess. Still, it's great to see more craft beer popping up in Bulgaria. I won't be buying this again; even the plastic bottle macrobrew lagers available in Bulgaria are often better.
