Brief impressions from a 500ml brown glass bottle purchased at 100 Beers in Sofia, Bulgaria in January 2016. 5% ABV.
HEAD: ~1 finger wide. Khaki colour. Creamy, with a nice consistency. Retention is above average - ~3 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: It's a predictable opaque black. No yeast can be seen within.
Appears adequately carbonated. Far from unique or special for a porter, but certainly within conventions. A darker, longer lasting head would be an improvement.
AROMA: Enticing chocolate malts coupled with some breadiness and muted roast. The chocolate presence is interesting, but also mingles with faint fennel, caramel, slightly burnt grains, and a hint of artificial vanilla.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Matches the aroma, with sufficient balance and decent depth of flavour. This goes after a classic English porter build, and frankly I think it nails it - though there's room for still more depth and intricacy of flavour. More authentic vanilla bean character, richer cocoa (with a concomitant powdery mouthfeel), and more roasted barley would help bring this to the next level.
TEXTURE: Could be softer and creamier. Medium-bodied, with the requisite smoothness and wetness of a classic porter. Overall presence on the palate is good.
OVERALL: Not a gestalt build, nor a beer with a true harmony of texture and taste. But it's above average for a porter (especially one from the Balkans), and drinks easily with a fair price. You could do far worse, but there's ample room for improvement. The ester-free yeast profile lends this an almost schwarzbier-y lager-y cleanliness, to its detriment, and each constituent note (the roast, the vanilla, the chocoate) could be improved. You could do far worse when in Bulgaria.
