Full Curl Wee Heavy Scotch Style AleFull Curl Wee Heavy Scotch Style Ale
Notes: Full Curl Scotch Ale is brewed in the traditional Wee Heavy Scotch strong ale style. (This is not to be confused with the lighter-bodied Scottish ale style.) All about malt, Full Curl pours dark brown with a tan head. Its medium body provides sustenance while its strength boosts courage. With a stiff mug of Full Curl under your belt, you may even have what it takes to don a kilt.

Presentation: 22 oz brown bomber “Month & Week Bottled” freshness date on the side of the label.

Appearance: Extremely poor head retention, it foams up quick and drops like a glass of soda. The clarity is fine with a mahogany hue.

Smell: Deep ripe fruitiness with waves of mellow estery alcohol, hints of caramel and raisins in the aroma also.

Taste: Thin mouth feel for the style, not smooth at all … sort of slick and tingly on the tongue. The carbonation is out of whack with, again, no smoothness or level crispness. Bread crust-like toasted graininess shows that the malt character is a bit shallow. Hops are meek and bring little to the table. The alcohol warmth is the only trait that seems in line as well as the caramel fruity mix.

Notes: A sad example of the style, no major off flavours but the brew has its problems.

This ale is correctly labeled as a strong scotch ale. This stuff will knock your socks off and get you through those cold alaskan winters. The reason for the drinkability is the strength of the brew. The powerful characteristics will bode well for the lovers of scotch ales, but i think the style itself is an acquired taste.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown. With a quickly dissapearing white head. Excellent malty taste. a different sort of feel than my only other beer I've tried from this style, McEwans. I am having trouble describing the flavors in this beer, smooth toffee notes, no real bitterness. This beer just really agrees with me. I would really recommend this stuff. Thanks goes out to my Brother, who brought this stuff from Alaska.

Rough pour gives a small off white head that fades away quickly. Dark brown body with a sweet smell. Taste starts with a soothing caramel sweetness. Roasted waltnuts throughout. Ends with earthy flavors.
Not too familiar with this style. I could see a bigger body with less carbonation working well with this.

22 oz bottle, notched March 2002.
Pours dark amber/mahogany, with a tan, dense head.
Nearly opaque body with maroon tanslucency near the edges.
Half-inch head settles quickly to reveal a thin surface coat with ring-like lacework.
Nose is mainly filled with roasted malts, caramel, and light chocolate.
Some light fruit notes reveal themselves as the brew warms, as well as some very mild alcohol.
Body is on the thick side of medium, but not by much, lightly syrupy and a bit slick.
Pallet is malty and chocolatey, with light roast.
Finishes with hints of licorice, toffee, and brown sugar.
Fairly dry for a wee-heavy and a bit mainstream in character.
Lightly warming, and prickly on the throat and back of tongue in the end.
Very drinkable and holding up extremely well for the age, but not huge for style. More "balanced" and "accessable".
Big thanks to Timmcd64 for the bottle.

Had this beer fairly fresh in Alaska. Pours a ruby brown with a thick head. Has a massive malt nose with some hops at the end. The taste is a good balance of massive malt and some nice bitterness from the hops. Quite nice. Very winey finish. The mouthfeel is a little thin, and it needs a little less carbonation, but not bad. Quite drinkable. Slides down fairly well, but a nice fresh malt flavor keeps it interesting. The decent hop level keeps it from being cloying. I enjoyed it.

aside from traquair house, this is my favorite wee heavy of all. i think that midnight sun made a huge mistake in discontinuing this beer. There is one bottle in my cellar, but it doesnt belong to me. the owner ( and u know who u are) will not be getting it out without pouring me a glass! very smooth, fairly light mouth feel for a scotch ale, good head, goes down very smooth with intense scotch ale flavor and great nose and aftertaste
