Notes / Commercial Description:
This very special Double IPA was brewed with a brewer-made blend of Indian curry spices--like ginger, coriander, cumin, clove, cinnamon, tumeric, black mustard seeds, black pepper, fenugreek and red chilies. Bangalore was hopped up with Summit, Chinook and Columbus hops.

First of the 2011 World Tour Series

22oz bottle, poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a deep, murky orange with one finger white head.

S: Heavy citrus and pine aroma. The spices are not heavily present, with light spicy ginger, coriander and clove being most easily detected.

T: Strong citrus and pine flavors dominate. The ginger adds light spiciness, however most of the other spices take a background to the hops. Though not individually discernible the spices are evident in the finish, and the spicy sweetness the offer works well with the bitter hops.

M: Medium body, smooth and a bit chewy. Finishes dry.

D: Definitely a good DIPA. The spices are interesting, but not so heavily present as to throw one off drinking. Not necessarily a beer to just sit down and drink by itself, especially given its higher ABV. Would be better paired with a sharp cheddar or, given it's origins, some smoked salmon.

A: The beer pours amber/orange in color (not shocking, I suppose), with a finger of off-white head.

S: The spices and curry come through with full force. It's almost all that you can smell, actually. A light citrus note (grapefruit, mostly) is there in the background. Maybe some floral notes, too.

T: As with the aroma, the curry dominates the flavor. It provides a slight sweetness as well as spice. Perhaps a touch of cinnamon in there, too. Mild grapefruit and pine bitterness on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation.

O: Much, much better than expected. Bordering on good, actually.

Brought back a bottle from Anchorage.

A - Pours a dark brownish orange with a finger and a half tan head. Nice retention and lacing.

S - Spices, and lots of them.

T - Hops, oranges, and spice.

D - Good carbonation and body.

O - This is a hopped up spice bomb. Very interesting and delicious.

A: Dark gold with a finger of white foam.

S: Orange flesh and...curry! There's some bread beneath. Strange concept but the curry smells pretty good with the citrus.

T: Grapefruit rind and orange pith with a lot of curry. I liked the curry more in the aroma, but it's not bad here. Upper moderate dry bitterness. Malt is reminiscent of bread and caramel.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Much better than I expected, but I don't think I'll be adding curry to my hoppy beers any time soon.

Slightly hazed deep bronze color with small sticky lacing foam.

Smells largely of piney hops with a peppery notion, and some warm sweet softening tropical fruit.

Jagged piney hops, large and loud, are both the first and the last thing you taste. But what occurs in the tween of that is what makes this. The initial hop blast subsides and then just when I start to think about apricots, there is a crisp peppery goodness that emerges, gets the room's attention and delivers an announcement of the upcoming encore of bitter hoppiness.

Mouthfeel is full, oily, drinks like a true double, it has the shoulders to call itself that.

Wow. I couldn't have been ready for or believed how well this curry spice would work with the DIPA without trying it. It is as enamoring to me as rye in ipa. Intriguing, huge, and yet totally a drinkable thing. And that's saying something.

A: Pours a hazy amber with short-lived beige head.

S: Very bitter, green, herbal, and grassy on the nose. I don't know what the hell everyone is referring to as "curry" (I seriously hate that word, it's a meaningless buzzword like calling Asian food "noodles"), but I pick up ginger, coriander, cumin, and turmeric pretty easily. Points for novelty.

T: Overwhelmed by green, grassy, herbal, pine, orange-rind, etc. bitter hops. Wow. This is terribly bitter. I can't stand it.

M: Finishes dry, bordering on astringent. The hops make the beer tea-like and bitter, leaving a drying taste on the palate. Too harsh for me.

D: One of the few drainpours of the night.

134th Review
Bottle to snifter

From notes. I opened this bottle at bspringer's birthday celebration. An epic night for sure to celebrate his golden day of birth!

A: Copper. 2+ (off-white) fingernail head on medium pour.

S: Curry, citrus, hops, and malt. Weird.

T: Loads of spice (front to back) and subtle hop character. Hints of pepper, curry, and all spice. Pine and citrus are extremely hidden and overshadowed.

M: Medium bodied with good carbonation.

O: Not sure if this beer was past its prime or this how it is supposed to taste, but it is definitely unique. I can appreciate what the folks at MSBC were going for here, but I'd like to try it fresh and with some Indian food.

My wife's friend just came back from Japan a couple of weeks ago. We had her over for dinner. She brought some orange curry from there, and we cooked up some brown rice. Mixed in some chicken, onions and peppers, in this delectable, spicy sauce. Should have had this then.
An orange sunset, the color of the bottle and the sun glinting off of a monstrous bronze Buddha. or is it gold? They say pure gold is so soft you could reach out and grab a handful of it off of a statue. A picturesque white lace skitters down the glass and leaves a perfect sheet like those things that hang down around a bed and make the bed a fortress in the daytime and a white island in a dark sea of ghosts at night. Can you imagine, a dark creaky house, sliding your arm out from between the lace wall that surrounds you because of nature's call? Better to wait till morning, one gets the feeling that you may pull back a nub.
A candy malt aroma wafts over you along with the lingering smell of that delicious food... the wife wouldn't eat it again, she felt like it made her smell funny. So there it is, the perfect marriage of a lightly spicy, coriander and ginger, but unmistakeably an orange curry. A beautiful marriage with the American double IPA, they will have a long life together in the creaky dark tower. A peppery spice and an almost salty pumpkin flavour, but in a good way. What an odd marriage, this. You must adore both elements to enjoy this. But as usual, our Alaskan friends succeed in precisely what they set out to do. Beautiful. Keep your arms inside till morning, and you needn't worry.

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Pours a very appealing orange with a medium off-white head that dissipates after a couple minutes.

Complex aroma of hops and the indian spices. However, the spices seem to be in moderation, allowing the full aroma of the hops to prevail.

The taste is very interesting. Once again, the spices play a backseat role, but present themselves enough to make this a truly unique beer.

Pours a deep orange with a finger of white foam that fades without any lacing.

Smell is intriguing. Definitely get the curry aroma. A lot of sweet honey malt, some bitter hops on the end.

Taste is ... awkward? The front of the palate is nice. Sweet honey malts, a some curry spice, some balancing hops. However, the finish and after taste are not delightful. Bitter with an odd unhappy, half digested curry feeling. Intriguing, but not a completely successful experiment.

Feel is solid. Medium bodied and well carbed, but nothing special.

Overall, and interesting and tasty experiment. Tasty, but not something I'd seek out.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip. Thanks to Dunt for bringing out this oddity.

Appearance: The pour is a copper amber color, mostly transparent with a thin off-white film of a head on top.

Smell: A very spicy nose. Pleasant, with pumpkin, caramel malt, molasses, all spice, nutmeg, and some spicy hops.

Taste: The flavor starts sweet like a pumpkin ale. Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cinnamon, caramel, and molasses up front. All spice and nutmeg come in before some spicy, herbal and light piney hops. The finish has a lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, with a creamy carbonation. Slightly grainy, with a full resiny residue.

Overall: This is interesting, but it does not really remind me of curry at all. The finish has a little bit of an off aftertaste.

22 fl oz bottle poured into a goblet. No apparent freshness date on the bottle. Bottle purchased from La Bodega. Double IPA with Indian curry spices...should be interesting. 85 IBUs. Should be consuming with Indian food. Oh well, perhaps another time. Beer pours a not-too-hazy burnt orange with some nice lacing and about 2-3 fingers of white foam that simmers down to about one.

The nose on this is like no other--I get the hop bitterness combined with the spicy aroma of an Indian restaurant. Pine resin mixed with curried chicken. I'm going in.

Taste is upfront citrus/pine resin bitterness that transitions to a seriously spicy kick--ginger and curry are identifiable. Just enough malt in there to add a trace of sweetness that helps to provide some level of balance. This is a very tasty concoction. I think the hop profile is more...well...hard to tell. At some points it seems like pine, other points I taste a little g-fruit juice and orange peel to give it some pucker effect. Maybe some of the spice comes from the hops. Somewhat hard to trace everything here. The Indian curry spices give this one an intriguing spicy exclamation point at the end that lingers.

Mouthfeel is ideal for the style. Well carbonated attack on the taste buds. Nothing much else to say about that.

Overall a unique must try in my book. Don't know if this will ever be brewed my MS again. We can only hope.
