Slightly hazy golden amber color. Poured a short head that turned into medium sized bubbles in half a minute and a patchy skiff after another half a minute. Moderate flow of mixed size bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Left long narrow strips of lacing.
Strong malt smell, similar to rye. The second strongest smell was dijon mustard, with a bit of nose burn. Very light vegetal hop smell. Just a hint of barnyard would come and go. There was something else that was a bit sharp that would come and go. Swirling the glass kicked up a much stronger barnyard which faded away after a few seconds.
Very malty flavor, again tending more towards a rye. The dijon mustard flavor is quite strong, even to the point where there is a real or imagined burn. Slightly sweet. There is something else a bit sharp that I could not identify. As it warmed up it started to taste more and more like the classic you-brew Hires rootbeer that used yeast for carbonation. The aftertaste is stronger rye and less dijon. Still a bit of a burn.
Light tongue tingling. Foam more like a soft drink than a beer. A bit oily towards the end.
I enjoyed this, as it was very unusual. Mostly interesting smell and taste, but it lost points because it didn't smell or taste at all like a hefe. Was the wrong hose connected to the bottling line?
