Poured from 500mL bottle into a dimpled mug. This is the rum barrel aged version of Nostromo.
Appearance: rich dark brown hue, almost black, with some dark brown highlights around the edges when held up to the light. Head is two thick fingers of frothy tan foam. It's a pretty beer!
Smell: there might be a little roast in the works there somewhere, but the story here is RUM. It's sweet and oaky, with a bit of an appropriate lager yeast character. It ... might be a bit much for me. I like it so far, but let's see how the taste shakes out.
Taste: boozy, right up front, no question about it. It's good and all, but really, I think something of the Baltic porter character is lost here. Don't get me wrong, it's a good beer, but it's very much a "rum barrel beer" and the original style just can't seep through.
Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a moderate carbonation and decent creaminess. Honestly, I was expecting something a lot smoother from the ABV and style.
Overall: I gotta say, I love the idea of this beer! Baltic porter? Check! Rum barrels? Check! But the one really hides the other, and I think this beer works a little better on paper than in execution.
